Blues re-sign 'well-respected leader' Taufa Funaki

The Blues have locked down halfback Taufa Funaki on a new two-year deal in their latest off-season move.

Funaki has played 42 games for his hometown team, with seven tries. A Sacred Heart College product, the 25-year-old former New Zealand U20 player’s signature comes as the club loses stalwart Sam Nock after 11 seasons representing the City of Sails.

Funaki was a big contributor to the drought-breaking 2024 Super Rugby Pacific title run, and says he is excited to return for another two seasons.

“I grew up in Auckland dreaming of wearing the Blues jersey, so to be able to continue that journey and keep representing the 09 is something I’m grateful for,” he said.

“The support from our fans has been unreal since I debuted. Running out at Eden Park in front of them is something I never take for granted, and I’m excited about what our new group can do over the next few years.”

Funaki has been the youngest member of the Blues’ halfback cohort in recent seasons, earning minutes in a group that also includes 30-cap All Black Finlay Christie. Blues GM Rugby Murray Williams expressed the club’s delight at securing Funaki through until the 2028 season.

“Taufa has developed into a well-respected leader among his peers, and we’re pleased he’ll remain with us for another two seasons,” Williams said.

“We’ve seen huge growth in Taufa over the past few seasons, and we’re excited about where his game can go. Retaining high-quality local talent is a key part of our strategy, and Taufa is someone we believe will play a significant role in the future of the Blues.”

Last week, the Blues announced the appointment of Ben Afeaki as an assistant coach on Jason Holland’s new staff, having previously named Tamati Ellison as the new defence coach. The club has also signed former Highlanders playmaker Cam Millar to replace the outgoing Stephen Perofeta, and re-signed Payton Spencer until 2029.
