Aki Tuivailala: The latest Hamilton Boys High product in Crusaders colours

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA - JULY 9: Aki Tuivailala of New Zealand U20 during the World Rugby U20 Championship 2023, 5th Place semi final match between New Zealand and Australia at Athlone Sports Stadium on July 9, 2023 in Cape Town, South Africa. (Photo by World Rugby/World Rugby via Getty Images)

The Crusaders have profited handsomely from the rugby production factory that is Hamilton Boys High School, and that trend continues in 2025 with the addition of Aki Tuivailala.

The two-time New Zealand U20 representative is set for his debut Super Rugby Pacific season with the Christchurch club, having been lured south by head coach Rob Penney after a strong NPC season with Waikato.

It’s a big move for a young man to make, and Tuivailala identifies as a “big family person”, adding to the weight of the move.

Luckily, he’s been greeted by a club eager to embrace new talent and who pride themselves on creating a family-esque environment.

“The boys are real welcoming, the coaches too. They’re like family, especially for me moving away from the north island, it’s been a big thing for me,” the 20-year-old told media in Christchurch.

“I’m loving this place, Christchurch is a beautiful place. The people are nice. There’s no better place to be.”

As the Garden City welcomes one of their newest and most promising young talents, Tuivailala has some familiar faces to show him around; a trio of former high school teammates.

“I played with Noah (Hotham), Taha (Kemara), Tahlor (Cahill). It’s good to see the boys thriving and doing their thing.

“Taha helped me a bit, getting me down here and making me feel more comfortable, showing me around.”

Newly capped All Black Noah wasn’t the only Hotham by Tuivailala’s side in the Hamilton First XV, his dad Nigel Hotham was wrapping up a legendary 21-year career as head coach of the team while the youngster was finishing his schooling career.

“He’s crazy that guy,” Tuivailala laughed. “But he’s a good man. He taught me a lot, taught me how to work hard and how to be a good man first.”

The former First XV co-captain has donned the black jersey plenty of times now at the age-grade level and while he also qualifies for Tonga, he says his ambition is to represent New Zealand.

It was in at centre he made a name for himself throughout his high school career, but he split time between the midfield and wing for the Baby Blacks and was used nearly exclusively on the wing for Waikato in the NPC.

While he’s more than capable of playing both positions, the young gun is set on a career in the No. 13 jersey. There’s no shortage of midfield talent to learn from at the Crusaders.

“A goal for me is to get better each day, by one per cent, learning off midfielders like Levi (Aumua), (Dallas) McLeod, (David) Havili, boys like that. And just try to grow my game.”

Tuivailala was clearly keen to improve on his “sub five minute” bronco time to start preseason, eagerly aware of the next fitness test coming his way in January. To be fair to the youngster, 2024 has been a busy year.

“It’s been a lot. It’s been a good year. I think I’m just grateful for all the opportunities and things that have come my way. Never realised how fast everything moves.”

Great to see Aki Tuivailala at the Crusaders. Played well for Waikato and NZ Under 20's. Hamilton Boys High has become a great feeder for the Crusaders . Plenty of great local talent coming through, such outstanding young lock Liam Jack. Nephew of All Black Chris Jack. His Dad Graham was in the NPC winning Canterbury team of 1997 . Locked the scrum with Reuben Thorne. Two of his team mates Dads were in that team too, Todd Blackadder, ( captain) , son is Ethan and Angus Gardiner son is Dominic.

Crusaders & NZ certainly need to develop midfield talent as neither are particularly strong there. Good luck and best wishes to this young player.

Scott Robertson has to take charge of his All Blacks in 2025

Super rugby is bleeding . when was the last year super rugby made profit ? . Real growth is determined by how much money you generate . Remember super rugby is a business first and currently it's not optimal . Australia will always be wiping boys in super rugby , they don't have the path ways that we do . In Australia union is made for private school kids and with that in mind it'll never grow bigger than what it is . And the South africans would be wiping boys again if they came back to super rugby . because the time differences is too much on the body . So super rugby as a genuine profitable product is a lie .

So what's the plan ? . It's quite simple really you cut off super rugby and stop the bleeding . put all the money back into the remaining competitions . Get the 1st 15 back on tv and have content creators at every level of the game making highlight reels for all the up and coming stars . the faster people know who players are , the interest will grow . streamers are the new stars of this generation . So NZRU should follow suite . watch these kids from 1st 15 and follow them all the way to the top . Some will succeed but most will fail . But that's the real point of interest . To see who will make it . And who wont .

Of coarse the quality of rugby will drop for a little , but once rivalries spark again . it wont take long for performances to lift and with that quality will only improve . All of a sudden the player exodus is a hoax just like covid and only our very best players leave to off shore pastures because they conquered every level in New Zealand and theres nothing left here to do .

I also have no ideas for equilibrium . I only have simple and easy solutions for the current problems in NZ rugby . You said we 20 of our best are currently off sure . Being the best means you are good enough to wear the All Black jersey . Currently only 3 players off shore would fit that criteria . Mounga , Frizell and Fainga nuku . so who are the rest ? . I also haven't read any stories about 100k offers to any up and coming talent . If there's a link you would like to share on that matter , I would definitely take the time to read it . Also don't be worried about who will play for the All Blacks and who wont . 10-15 years ago the "Tongan Thor Taniela Tupou" was a menace in 1st 15 he left to play for the wallabies . Yes he would have been a great asset for the All Blacks . But at the end of the day . Money only keeps the lights on , We only want players who want to play for the black jersey no matter where they play in the world .

We don't poses the world cup . But we are still the best in the world at rugby , of that I have no doubt . And if Razor gets his way results will follow quickly .
