Ethan Roots Bio

Born in New Zealand on 10 November 1997 to a Māori mother and an English father, Ethan Roots played amateur club rugby for East Coast Bays before representing North Harbour in the 2019 Mitre 10 Cup. He immediately caught the eye and signed for the Crusaders in Super Rugby a year later. However, he only made one appearance for the Super Rugby franchise that season.

In March 2021, Ethan Roots made the difficult decision to leave New Zealand and sign for Ospreys. He made 38 appearances for the Welsh side between 2021 and 2023, before moving to Exeter Chiefs in the English Premiership. He’s represented the English club ever since.

Despite representing the Māori All Blacks in 2020, Ethan Roots opted to represent England after qualifying to play for the team on ancestry grounds. He made his England debut in 2024 during the team’s Six Nations Championship match against Italy. He excelled immediately and was given the Player of the Match award on his debut.

Still young and with plenty left to prove on both the domestic and international stages, Ethan Roots looks set to be a star of the game. We can’t wait to watch how his career unfolds from here.
