Connacht leave it late to upset URC table toppers

Connacht scored two late tries to upset United Rugby Championship leaders Glasgow Warriors 15-10 in Galway.

Defences were on top in the opening hour with the only points being a penalty from Connacht’s Sam Gilbert.

The game swung Glasgow’s way after 58 minutes when home second-row forward Joe Joyce was sent to the sin bin.

Glasgow made the most of their numerical advantage three minutes later as Kyle Rowe dotted down from Dan Lancaster’s pass.

Winger Rowe scampered over again seven minutes later after collecting Lancaster’s kick and beating home defenders.

Connacht levelled matters six minutes from time when Gilbert converted Josh Murphy’s try, and the Irish province kept alive their hopes of a top-eight finish as Sean Jansen scored a dramatic stoppage-time try.

The author of this report cannot have been at the game. He wrote that Aled Davies’ try was converted, which, with Sheedy’s penalty, would have meant the score was 10-7, not 8-7. Perhaps PA should stop using AI and actually go to the game?

Mass wise they effectively matched the French with their remarkable two lock bench. Ruuan came on minute 10 and returned minute 40. Hybrid Esteheizen on minute 62 just after Bierrey carded. Two quick tries scored - game lost as French lost all cohesion - and that is where the game was lost.

Borthwick hasn’t really built depth unless forced to by injuries. There are plenty players deserving of a chance but are overlooked notably Oghre and Blamire at hooker, Batley and Bamber at lock. There need to be more A team games to expose players but ultimately at test level they need to be exposed to credible opponents to determine if they can cut it or not. Unfortunately England are often very short sighted in this regard whereas others like SA, NZ, Australia, France, Ireland, and Scotland try to develop depth where possible

Looking on the bright side (unkown), at least Fin Smith or Caluori were not playing, so there may be a good chance they are in camp this week, which suggests they may get a chance for these next 2 games.

Well NB, I was a little surprised to see Cunningham South, Murley, Ojomoh, Atkinson, & Furbank playing in the PREM Cup matches this weekend (with Hendy on the bench).

Let’s look on the bright side, neither Fin Smith or Caluori were playing, so I can only assume they were probably training with the rest of the squad this week, so they might have a chance.

The game is changing all the time, I don’t recognise it as the game we played/watched in the 60s/70s. Even things like replacements which used to be only for injury have gone by the way etc. Are these ones being used in SR going to change thins, I doubt it, and the whole keep the game in motion is always stumped at test level anyway. go to any test and see sme of the injury breaks etc that are obvious rest periods, see ‘bomb squads’ coming on , and tell me the game isn’t already been corrupted in it’s values. HIA’s being used as and when it suits to give players breaks when they need an extra breather. Raynal is right that set piece is central to our game, but so WAS fitness fpr all players to be fitter than opposition toe still scrum etc for 80 minutes!

I’m know the players released to the clubs doesn’t offer much confidence for selection for the Italy game. Hope I am proved wrong. The interview from Borthwick stating he feels relaxed really concerned me as after the last two matches which were dreadful and the complete drop off in performance and execution he should feel under pressure and England should be adopting a bit of a siege mentality. The whole environment around the team just seems off and something is not right. Think Borthwick has run his course

Against Ireland in every 50-50 clash it seemed that the Irish came up with the ball as though they wanted it more for Farrell, than the English did for Borthwick. Players weren’t 1-2 % off their game, it was more like 10 - 20 %. As an England fan, I expect every player to give his all. Last week they didn’t!

Plenty of good hookers but none get a look in past George and LCD with Borthwick. It’s very short sighted given LCD’s dips in form and George’s age. Oghre is prob the best all round hooker in the Prem. Langdon is good but has misfortune with injuries. Blanker is good but throwing lets him down (kind of a younger LCD). Tuipolotu needs more experience and to work on throwing but has a high ceiling. Blake shows promise at Gloucester. Dan is decent albeit a bit lightweight and has not managed to truly surpass George at Saracens. There is talent there but the lack of exposure at international level is an issue. The stalwarts should sit out the Nations Cup to build depth and let the younger generation step up

I have to say, considering his team have gone out and put in two awful performances, Steve Borthwick appears to back himself to turn the ship in these next results.

I think injury and fatigue is really catching up with his players, so it needs a bigger shake up than you would normally expect, so I was a little disappointed to see Cunningham-South, Murley, Ojomoh, Atkinson & Furbank being sent back to their clubs for the week to then meet up next week (which likely means they will not be considered).
