The RFU can’t allow Borthwick to fail. He’s been in and out of the setup for a decade and was responsibly succession planned for Eddie’s end. It seemed smart business at the time.

With hindsight, it seems he was just there if/when Eddie got sacked, the compostable chap that he is.

Given we had 5x7s in the 23 the breakdown should’ve been an area of strength but none of them were effective. The English clear outs were not good enough and they miss a traditional 6 and 8 to assist in this area. There is also too much hanging around in the backline than doing the required grunt work. The lack of balance in the back row needs to be addressed. Earl and Pollock are both fast and have good footwork but lack the ballast to muscle through the opposition and the tendency to hang out in wide channels means they shouldn’t be selected together especially against an effective back row unit like Ireland’s

Good read. What about the back row battle where England comprehensively got outplayed by the Irish? Your fellow RugbyPass writer Gavin Mortimer put an article out called “Why England's ex-pats are hurting France's backrow depth chart” and put these quotes in.

Writing in the Sunday Times at the weekend, Stuart Barnes mused over Borthwick’s selection conundrums for the Six Nations opener and said: “There’s little to say about the back row, other than it is packed with talent, variety and options.”

I think he’s already done a lot to remould his own philosophy, but Eng are not near the top of the mountain yet, so more needs to be done.

Hard to deflect the lessons of a game like that isn’t it?

If we are playing ball in hand rugby, Fin Smith & Dingwall are the natural combination and you will see a dramatic change in firtunes.

Re Ford’s running metres, I agree. If he gives the ball immediately, Arundel could have routinely jinked in towards the big gap between JGP and O’Brien and then out and around to score once O’Brien stepped in. If O’Brien didn’t step in, then Arundel either makes it fullythrough the gap or can easily off-load back to Ford etc.

Ford delayed and JGP frantically waved to O’Brien to stay out as he had the space inside was now covered and Ireland were allowed solve the problem.

Most would accept the “backing my players” narrative he put out pre match and no one saw that performance coming. Having put that rationale out there and given the outcome, he would be a fool not to make the changes now, to align with what was always going to be the required gameplan at some point before the World Cup.

I think the data and playing performance confirms that Steve Borthwick needs a Rassie moment to turn the tide . . . . But will he be able to admit he got it wrong NB??

He’s normally pretty stubborn and is both conservative and loyal . . . . and I am not yet convinced that he ready to cut so many players he has been loyal to.
