Suntory Sungoliath confirm James Lowe as Cheslin Kolbe replacement

Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath have confirmed that Ireland and Lions star James Lowe will be replacing Springbok superstar Cheslin Kolbe in their Japan Rugby League One squad for the next two seasons.

New Zealand-born Lowe, 34, who has been capped 45 times for Ireland and was part of the Six Nations Championship triumphs in 2023 and 2024, as well as helping Leinster win the Champions Cup in 2018 and the United Rugby Championship last season.

He played 102 times for the Irish province, but leaves after failing to agree a new deal, joining Luke McGrath, Ciarán Frawley, and Will Connors, who have also departed Dublin, and admits that he is excited to take his family to live in Japan later this year.

“To everyone in the Suntory Sungoliath family, my family and I are incredibly excited to begin this new chapter of our lives in Japan. I have some very special memories from playing there.

“I have always admired the passion for rugby, the respect shown both on and off the field, and the pride people take in representing their team. I am looking forward to learning more about Japan and its culture. It is a huge honour to join such a prestigious club.

The two-year deal with Suntory Sungoliath will end his chances of playing at the World Rugby Cup in Australia next year, despite Ireland head coach Andy Farrell saying he was leaving the door open.

Lowe, who will join former All Blacks captain Sam Cane in the Japanese capital, has been signed because Kolbe is returning to the Stormers, where he will be playing alongside his close friend Siya Kolisi next season.
