Springboks player ratings vs France | Quilter Nations Series 2025

Lood de Jager of South Africa looks dejected as he leaves the field after being shown a red card by Referee Angus Gardner (not pictured), after a TMO Review concluded a high tackle on Thomas Ramos of France (not pictured), during the Autumn Nations Series 2025 match between France and South Africa at Stade de France on November 08, 2025 in Paris, France. Springboks player ratings: Once again the Springboks have sauntered into the home of French rugby, stomped all over the carpets with muddy boots, broken the good kitchenware and nicked a few family heirlooms.

The reigning world champions had a point to prove, that their one-point win in the quarterfinals two years ago was no fluke.

A stodgy first half, marred by a harsh red card, was quickly dispelled as the Boks ramped up the energy with some stirring performances from a handful of substitutes as they blew away the French and silenced a hostile crowd with a 32-17 win.

15. Damian Willemse – 6
Predictably assured in the back field. A canter back towards a loose ball in his own half, followed by a slippery wriggle out of contact under pressure in the first 40 summed up his game. Some neat touches elsewhere, it was the inaccuracy elsewhere that meant he was largely a peripheral figure. Replaced by Manie Libbok with just over 20 minutes to go.

14. Cheslin Kolbe – 6
Like most of his fellow backs, he was asked to cover on defence and chase kicks for most of the game. Made one swift recovery tackle on a cantering Louis Bielle-Biarrey in the corner and stood his ground when the flying French winger came straight at him down the tram.

13. Jesse Kriel – 7
Didn’t see much of the ball but helped marshal the defence when things fractured past the edge. Seven tackles made an impact and helped prevent France’s flying wingers from escaping down the tram.

12. Damian de Allende – 6
Made six carries but mostly from a standing start and without much penetration. Didn’t stink the place up, but didn’t set it alight either. Replaced by Andre Esterhuizen on 48 minutes as part of a triple switch.

11. Kurt-Lee Arendse – 6
Caught napping when Thomas Ramos dinked a kick in behind to tee up Damian Penaud’s early try, replicating a developing weakness he first showed in the loss to Australia in Johannesburg. Came into his own later on.

10. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu – 8
Much better when he moved to fullback. One outrageous offload out the back almost connected with Kolbe, and when he could run onto the ball, rather than dictate tempo, he was threatening. Scythed through the French defence when he linked with Libbok on a wraparound move. Wasn’t perfect, but when the ceiling is so high, even an imperfect performance is more than good enough.

9. Cobus Reinach – 8
Scored a stunning solo try when he broke from the back of a ruck, cut a line, chipped over the last defender and regathered to dot down. Couldn’t quite ignite play while the game was scrappy, but his individual brilliance stood out.

1. Boan Venter – 7
Was earmarked as a potential weak point in the team after Ox Nche’s withdrawal, but held his own until the 32nd minute when he was hooked — prematurely if you’re asking me — for Gerhard Steenekamp.

2. Malcolm Marx – 8
Brilliant as he so often is. Who would want to tackle, or be tackled, by this slab of granite? Abrasive in the loose and reliable at the line-out. There is now a large gap between South Africa’s premier hooker and the next cab off the rank.

3. Thomas du Toit – 7
Perhaps the most versatile prop in the world. Won two turnovers in the first half and helped procure a couple of scrum penalties. Not quite a master, this jack of all trades put in another commendable shift. Part of the triple sub on 48 minutes when he made way for Wilco Louw.

4. Eben Etzebeth – 5
Confrontational without being commanding. He wasn’t bossed by the French pack but didn’t do any bossing himself. A lukewarm contribution. Replaced by RG Snyman on 48 minutes.

5. Lood de Jager – 3
Was harshly shown a red card for a head-to-shoulder shot on Ramos. The French fullback was falling as the South African lock was stooping to tackle. Had Ramos stood upright he would have been hit in the chest. De Jager was handy before that and pinched a French line-out inside his own 22 as the first half drew to a close, though three missed tackles reduced his score.

6. Siya Kolisi – 5
Ten minutes before the start of his 100th Test, South Africa’s captain ran out to the centre of the Stade de France like a rock star, shrouded in the glow of a spotlight as fireworks exploded around him. We’ve become so used to fairytale moments from Kolisi that another was expected here. It wasn’t to be. After an inconspicuous first half he was hooked before the second as he made way for Ruan Nortje, on to shore up the pack following de Jager’s sending off.

7. Pieter-Steph du Toit – 7
The last time the reigning World Rugby player of the year stepped off the Stade de France, he had made 28 tackles against the All Blacks to help secure the World Cup. It was always going to be difficult to replicate that show but this felt well short of his usual standards. It’s not that he was poor, it’s just that he was quiet. He started the game by dropping a kick into touch but soon found his feet. A team high of nine tackles once again underlined his value.

8. Jasper Wiese – 9
South Africa’s best player. Solid either side of the ball. Brought his confrontational best when charging into heavy traffic with a team high of 17 carries. Indomitable. Might be his best ever game in Springboks green.

16. Johan Grobbelaar – N/A
Unused substitute.

17. Gerhard Steenekamp – 7
Replaced Boan Venter on 32 minutes and played his part in the front row.

18. Wilco Louw – 7
Won a penalty in his second scrum. No matter what happens in this world, you can be sure that South Africa will continue to produce monsters in the front row.

19. RG Snyman – 7
An instantly recognisable presence, his long levers are a weapon after contact. Despite some stiff carries and meaty tackles, he couldn’t turn the tide of the game.

20. Ruan Nortje – 7.5
Solid as a HIA replacement for de Jager early in the match and solid again when he made his permanent entry into the contest in the second half. His all-court game was on show as he won line-outs, stitched together moves in tight exchanges and added his heft around the fringe. A really good game.

21. Andre Esterhuizen – 8
His first job was to pack down on the side of a scrum in his new role as a hybrid centre-flank and bagged a try off the back of a rolling maul from a line-out. Performed his primary task of running hard and straight into contact across an excellent cameo that helped turn the tide.

22. Grant Williams – 8.5
Came on for Reinach on 60 minutes and instantly added zip with some fizzing passing off the base. Put the game to bed with a sniping dart off a line-out that included a dummy off the base and an explosion through the hole.

23. Manie Libbok – 7
Slotted in at fly-half when he replaced Willemse just before the hour mark. Like Feinberg-Mngomezulu, he looked to kick but was charged down at his first attempt when hacking from hand. Other than that, showed that he is a composed operator at first receiver. Perhaps it’s no coincidence that South Africa looked more threatening on attack when he came on and started running the show.

Daniel Gallan wrote a piece about “click bait” a few days ago - these rankings are designed to generate traffic. He’s pulled a “Rassie” on us 😉

Am I the only one who saw LdJ, cleanest player alive, going as low as a man of his height can go without sailing on stomach, how the ball hit him in the face to force him to look away and naturally drop his left shoulder and arm. Shocking no mitigation card! Would not stand in a court of law. Should not on a rugby field.

P
PMcD 34 days ago

I thought it was very tough for a 6ft 8 guy, who decided to go in low, to get red carded when the player goes from full height to half his height.

I don’t think Gardener even saw it as a yellow at first but the assistants took umbrage with the tucked shoulder, rather than arm up leading as they do in Europe to show arms in the tackle.

Personally, I thought it was a tough call and they need to be very careful about the message they are sending to tall players with the two red cards they have given in the last 2 weeks. There does seem to be a pattern against the big guys.

Potential backline against Italy:

Manie

KLA

Hooker

Chessy

Sacha

A bit tongue in cheek ;-) I don’t think Rassie will pick it but, otoh, who can tell with Rassie?

How good was Snyman coming off the bench? He’s absolutely rockstar quality making those impacts from the bench.

D
DP 35 days ago

SFM missed 3 straightforward kicks. Manie had two up and under charged down. This wasn’t a vintage performance at 10 but enough to destroy France in Paris. The silencing of the French crowd was a perfect 10. Wiese was my MOTM. Good game but needed 15 on the park to get our wingers into the action.. hopefully against Ireland.

Rassie is giving the youngsters an opportunity to shine but I still think he will find a place for Pollard in that final RWC 2023, to kick the points in that final quarter when it really matters.

Good ratings. The bench was phenomenal for the Springboks and even though their backs were quiet overall, they had far too much in the locker for that French 23 who were missing some key players.

The winning mentality on show in those last 15 minutes is something that the individual player ratings don’t factor in but you could see it made a massive difference.

Nah this SFM glazing has got to stop. Manie was much better in terms of what an actual 10 needs to do. He did not deserve man of the match, Jasper Wiese did. Sashas performance was a 7 at best and Manie an 8 considering that the second half ignited better under Manie. SFM has moments of excellence but as a 10, he was not as good as Manie.

P
PMcD 35 days ago

I actually thought PSdT deserved MotM. He was outstanding in the right exchanges and both he & Wiese were a big part of that win last night.

GrahamVF 35 days ago

Just remember Manie came on when the game opened up - he didn’t have those manic first 50 minutes when the French were all over the Boks. Manie would not have looked good in. that first half - the French tired badly from 50minutes.

These are incredibly low scores for a team that just beat France in Paris, by 15 points, playing with 14 men for 45 minutes.

Maybe the writer is French 🤷‍♂️

I think you need to go back to school. I’d guess SAs are 20-25 points higher. Count them up for us so we can see.

W
Wayneo 35 days ago

He’s a Saffa.

We set higher standards than others because we know our players are not playing close to their ceiling.

Just add 2 to the rating to compare apples.

J
JM 35 days ago

Yup I agree. I mean none of the players deserve a score below 7 after they beat the strongest NH team in their back yard and, like you mentioned, with 14 men. Shocking ratings!

B
BleedRed&Black 35 days ago

Okay, so what am I missing here? South Africa beat France, in Paris, which has a recent record there second only to the rather surreal record the AB's have at Eden Park, by 15 points despite being down a man for a net of thirty minutes in the 2nd half. They play a game perfect in tactics and morale when under extreme duress, where they look better, both solider and more threatening, than when they had fifteen men. And their ratings average under 7?

More specifically, and without wanting to sound repetitive, South Africa win by 19 points to 3 in the 2nd half when down by a man for thirty of the forty minutes of that half against a team that has a genuinely great record on that ground. That's impossible. But they did it. Which is really annoying.

The All Blacks are the second best team in the world, but at the moment the distance between them and the Springboks on a neutral ground [like in RWC 2027 in Australia] is 10 to 15 points. And the AB's are far and away the team most likely to beat the Springboks in the world cup. Ireland are fading fast, England won't be able to beat them in a dogfight, let alone in a ruck and run, and France, where Galthie has clearly lost his way, will implode, again, in yet another instance of their chronic inability to beat the Springboks in an important game, let alone a world cup.

Again, all this is really annoying. I doubt the 2027 RWC will be a procession for the Springboks, they haven't had a world cup without a defeat or a near death experience, often two, but its looking ugly. And the rest of the rugby world can't even claim they're dull. Which is the really annoying part.

P
PMcD 35 days ago

Great post and mostly correct but I think it might be closer between ENG & NZ than you think.

We’ll see next week.

J
JW 35 days ago

Haha well I think you alluded the answer in your question, they were dull, and they only played that well for half the game, so if second half are 9’s and first 5’s, then that’s your 7?

I certainly feel de Jager was inaccurately punished in his score. And Sacha could easily get a 9. People tend to look at the highlight real stuff be he was clinical in always getting the best outcome on the situation for South Africa. Key to dealing with the extra pressure.

P
PMcD 35 days ago

Crikey, to win a game like that away from home, when down to 14 for an entire half and maintain that level of forward intensity was heroic.

If anyone wondered how good this team is you got your answer tonight, the best team in the world with 14 players and most likely soon to be 3xRWC Champions when they keep 15 players on the park.

👏👏👏

You reckon the world is finally going to stand up and take notice now because it was against France?

B
Ben 35 days ago

I'm the critical sort of annoying fan. Not unfair, just never quite 100% happy. Suppose when you back the best that's what happens to your expectations. Strange then that a shocker of a first half turned out the be the most satisfying win of the year for me. I'm not after flukey runaway wins over our biggest rivals. What makes me feel at home are when we are down and kicked for good measure and just won’t stay down, dragging ourselves over the last few hard yards and never letting up. This was pretty vintage.

J
JW 35 days ago

Haha nice but what was shocking about the first half?

H
Hammer Head 35 days ago

I thought SFM had one of his worse games but redeemed himself a bit at the end.

I’d love to know why Boan was yanked at 30 minutes. It appeared as though Vermeulen had some words of encouragement for him when he came off.

Manie and the bench made a big impact. But the French really fell off at the end. Not sure if match fitness was an issue for them - but they seemed destined to win after 60 and then the Boks took control of the game.

A tough match. The Boks winning after the red card was very special. They just don’t go away.

Like their annoying fans.

Good night.

J
JW 35 days ago

I did look a some of their players and all of them have played 7/8 weeks straight leading into this game. Maybe not quite the ticker of say the Scots either, the French.

J
JD 35 days ago

Some of our countrymen can be a bit trying. But given the circumstances, a great win.
