Sam Underhill faces anxious wait over injury sustained in Bath win at Harlequins

Sam Underhill faces an anxious wait for an update on the biceps injury sustained in Bath’s 33-17 Gallagher Prem victory over Harlequins that endangers his involvement in England’s autumn.

Underhill lasted 48 minutes of the season opener at The Stoop and could be facing the prospect of missing more Tests after missing England’s July tour because of shoulder surgery.

Steve Borthwick’s men face Australia on November 8 in the first of four Nations Championship matches in November.

Bath head of rugby Johann van Graan said: “It seems like a biceps injury. Obviously Sam will have to go for a scan.

“As we know, if the biceps is gone that’s a number of months. Hopefully we’ve got a bit of grace there, but I guess we’ll know a bit more next week.”

Santi Carreras’ moment of magic against Harlequins was hailed as Bath’s try of the season by van Graan – even though it was produced on the opening night of the 2026-27 Prem.

The Argentina star prevented a certain home try by kicking forwards the scoring pass destined for Cadan Murley, gathering the ball and then finishing with a run that began just outside his own 22.

It was a unique try and Graan said: “What a player, what a moment. I’d certainly say from a try-scoring point of view, that was some moment in the game.

“I was asked in the week how’s Santi doing and I said he’s done some things in training last week where we were all like ‘where has this come from!? That’s amazing!’. So I smiled when he did that.

“In my view that’s going to be try of the season for us in round one. The decision to firstly use his foot and then the skill level to actually try and kick it up and not kick it down, to get it on the touchline, to keep his head and then to finish that.

“We’ve got some amazing players at our club and he’s certainly one of them.”

Quins were missing England stars Marcus Smith (hand), George Furbank (concussion), Fin Baxter (foot) and Alex Dombrandt (knee).

Smith could return as early as Saturday’s trip to Gloucester with Furbank expected back in time for the Kingsholm showdown, while Baxter is three or four weeks away from a comeback. Dombrandt is a longer-term injury.

Quins boss Jason Gilmore was pleased with a spirited start to the Prem. He said: “I’m really happy with the grit and the fight that they showed, particularly in the second half.

“We had some massive defensive sets on our goal line, which we withstood.

“I’m frustrated that we created a lot of line breaks but we panicked a little bit at the end of them and turned over far too much ball which released pressure off Bath.”
