There is a long term issue with both player and even more so coaching development (which feeds into the lack of player and skills development). We had perhaps the best coaching development system at the end of the amateur era and the beginning of the professional era (borrowing and building on Wales). Looks like both ourselves and Wales have let that slide. I don’t have an issue with using overseas coaches but we should be making more of our own - both specialist and head coaches.

predicting what SA need is difficult, given the age profile of the squad. They’ve had a really good couple of seasons, but have had a difficult start to both 2024 and 2025 due (in part) to established players from the year before aging out and Rassie taking some time to adjust. 2026 is unlikely to be any different!

In 2025 they were pretty reliant on Reinach (35), Kolisi (34), PSDT (33), & Kolbe (32). I’ll be very suprised if Reinach is still in the frame come 2027, so Grant Williams will need to step up - more importantly so will van den Berg.

ENG aren’t there yet to compete with SA.

SA are the best team but ENG will continue to improve over the next 12 months as the players improve and they bring some of the additional youngsters into the squad and they will be a growing force up to RWC 2027.

Agreed! Incredible that the Chiefs named a hooker on bench in that final vs Blues, who had never previouslypkayed Super Rugby. Ditto Wellington being forced (and able) to call Hika Elliot in for NPC final vs BOP. Just shows how thin our depth is, evenin the top provinces. French Top 14 sides (have more money) often have 4 sets of hookers and 4 jumping pods on the grass at training. And coaches just drill lineout and scrum for as long as it takes until the set piece is a well oiled machine. NZ teams IMO (at all levels) just aren't devoting enough time or placing sufficient emphasis to these phases. I think Tyrone Thompson is a very good rugby player without being a reliable set piece hooker.

Busy as always (I watch on stan) but he managed to get pinged for an illegal clean out vs saracens. It was identical to the one vs nz where we had a try disallowed as a result. Needs to get rid of these brain explosions
