Racing 92 hooker banned for 'brutality' after shocking headbutt
Racing 92’s Janick Tarrit has unsurprisingly received a five-match ban for his wanton headbutt on Toulouse’s Efraín Elías in the Top 14 at the end of November.
The hooker was shown a red card by referee Tual Trainini moments before half time in his side’s 48-24 loss to the Top 14 champions for brazenly launching his head into the chest of the flanker after a ruck.
The 27-year-old will therefore be unavailable until Racing 92’s second match of 2026.
The offence was one of the most clear-cut red cards in a long time, or at least since Eben Etzebeth’s, which happened to occur on the same day.
The game was in the balance at the time of the headbutt, and Racing had just kicked the ball out for half time at the Stade Ernest-Wallon with the score only 8-3 to the hosts. However, Toulouse scored a try from the ensuing penalty before the break, scored by Elias himself, and began to run away with the match.
A Ligue Nationale Rugby statement reads: “Following a hearing this week, the offence was deemed to be a medium degree of severity, carrying a 10-week ban, but it was reduced to five due to varying mitigating factors.
“Mr. Janick Tarrit was found guilty of ‘brutality,’ specifically of ‘headbutting.’
“The penalty, considered a medium level according to the severity scale, was a 10-week suspension.
“After taking into account mitigating circumstances (expression of remorse, admission of guilt, and conduct before and during the hearing), the sanction was reduced by 5 weeks.
“Therefore, Mr. Janick Tarrit is suspended for 5 weeks.
“As of December 10, 2025, and considering the Racing 92 match schedule, Mr. Janick Tarrit will be eligible to play again on January 4, 2026.”
