PWR announces structure for 2026/27 season

Premiership Women’s Rugby has confirmed that the 2026-27 league season will start on the weekend of 21st -22nd November 2026.

The upcoming PWR season will be an exciting time for rugby fans which will include the 2027 Women’s Six Nations, a revamped WXV Global Series and the first ever British & Irish Lions Women’s tour to New Zealand.

The PWR remains one of the most prestigious and popular leagues in world rugby for fans and players alike, and will see the world’s best players competing for their place at these showpiece international tournaments.

After 16 rounds, the league will take a break for the Women’s Six Nations before returning for Round 17 on the weekend of 29-30th May with the PWR final taking place on the weekend of Saturday 26-27th June 2027, following 18 rounds and two semi-finals.

The PWR Cup will also return in 2026, acting as a curtain-raiser for the regular PWR season serving as an opportunity for players to obtain crucial minutes in a competitive playing environment.

With five more rounds of the 2025/26 Premiership Women’s Rugby season to go it does now feel like we know the identities of all nine clubs.

The Cup begins on the weekend of 19-20th September 2026, with the final being held on the weekend of 7-8th November.

The PWR has enjoyed exponential growth and this will only continue as we look forward to a packed, star-studded women’s rugby calendar in 2027. This coming season will be a milestone moment for the league as our athletes compete to win places in the inaugural British & Irish Lions tour to New Zealand.

Fair enough, I think so too. With Depoortere out for the season, UBB might not make the Top 14 final. I genuinely think Pau or Montepellier could make it. If that happens, should players not have played too many matches then guys like Lucu, Buros, Jalibert, Woki, Matiu, Moefana and Lamothe could travel to play the All Blacks in that first Nations Cup game. I would like to see that, although you did say you think UBB is more on the upward trajectory than Toulouse at the start of this season…..

Yes, he’s been strong this season too but unfortunately has done some bad things. Speaking of doing bad things, how many weeks do you think Jegou will get?

He’s done it before with Le Garrec 9 Dupont (c) 10 for a little bit at the end of games. Could be something to revisit although I’m not sure we’ll see it this weekend.

Phil Waugh’s rallying cry to AFL, NRL fans after Zac Lomax signing

I think it’s about 150k or something, not much relatively speaking. I think he just didn’t get any offers from Japan or France, so RA went for the bargin buy. Would be good for the Force too, even if it’s short-term. Unlikely he’ll play much as a Wallaby, but it’s a little extra to Super rugby at least, and as they say, any PR is good PR.

What he is trying to say is that the emotional side might detail Scotland as it already have done this 6N. He isn't saying they can't do it or they can't win. It's like knockout stages like in the WC. You have to pitch up 3 games in a row to win it, ride that emotional wave to victories, but the Scots have always had that problem. Very good one week, the next poor. They are a lot like Argentina in that aspect. Up and down and can beat anyone anywhere at any time and can catch you asleep. However, the next round is like a WC final of sorts, and 3 teams still in it to win it. Can Scotland do it with all that pressure on them? They don't only need to beat the Irish, they need to beat them comprehensively due to the points difference. I don't see France lose, so even if the Scots manage to put up 50 against the Irish, it would still not help them win the trophy. They need France to lose. It's up to them to stop the Irish. No matter how good the Scots is, they lost the 6N against France when they allowed them back into the game. The French only lost 10 points in the end on their points difference.

It occurred to me, but Scotland could finally be regarded as a genuine contender for RWC 2027 if they win Saturday, especially given the draw. Arg/Eng/Aus between them and a final if they can deal with Ireland going forward.

It’s not right to call it Plan A as that suggests there is an alternative or contingency plan. It’s simply just Borthwick’s plan.

France at home with everything to play for and scoring tries for fun will blow this England side away. Loose kicks will be punished, and unless there is more balance in the England back row they will be turned over repeatedly and outworked.

I agree they should have evolved and bringing in Blackett was to add another dimension however his style of attack is not being translated to the team, which raises the question why and who is responsible. The defence is a shambles and again looks disjointed and confused - I suspect this is due to Wigglesworth being a complete novice as a defence coach. I suspect Borthwick leans to much to what his mates say than what the better qualified coaches say, and is probably why Jones and Walters left. Borthwick’s selections have been a massive issue as well, the back row is horribly unbalanced and is shown by how poor we are at protecting the ball at the breakdown and the inability to clear out rucks properly. We have been playing with 5 open sides yet against Scotland and Ireland only Pollock made a turnover from the back row, it did improve against Italy but Itoje was the standout in that regard albeit the back row did contribute more. The tackle count also shows the back row is being outworked by the opposition. The overhaul of the backline helped no one and seemed a very panicked decision. England need a reset, the talk of four year cycles is only relevant if you have a chance of winning the RWC but at the moment we don’t. We haven’t been very competitive in the 6N over the past 5 years so to talk about the RWC is fantasy

I agree it is new. But regardless of how well they are playing, it is night on impossible for the same group of players to reach such heights (emotionally, mentally, physically) 7 days later. We saw this with the Boks V France in the RWC SF after a huge match versus France. Ireland will drag them into a physical attritional encounter.

Its a cliche but Scotland may need to get ahead early and avoid the match evolving into the usual pattern.

To me, Italy is the talk of this 6N. Of all the teams, I feel they have improved the most and has been the most consistent of all the teams. They are a real threat now and they are just getting better and better. This is going to be a golden generation for Italy. A bit like the Irish who was useless and then became somebody. I see a minimum of WC quarters for them in 2027, maybe even a semi final. Italy was really very good this 6N

But the Boks did NOT repeat the highs of the QF victory against France in 2023 against England in the SF or indeed against ABs in the final. 7 days is not enough.

The conservativeness is rife isn’t it. Any turnovers secured, France and Scotland flick a switch and start slinging the ball around… england take contact and look to kick?!. Conservative stifling rugby and that’s coaching. The players don’t play like that at their clubs.

It looked to me like Scotland was more in celebration mood the last 15 minutes. It's like they thought they can't lose anymore, and that's why France hit back so hard and fast and nearly won in the end. If that game was 5 minutes longer, the Scots would have lost. They screwed up big time by allowing France to score 4 tries in the last quarter. That would have put Scotland in the lead and France in 2nd. That points difference is what is going to give the French the 6N. I don't see the Scots put 60+ on Ireland

In a way, that's exactly the problem with the 6N. They can't repeat those top performances week in and out, and maybe that is why the results are so skewed. That is a good point. However, a professional team needs to move on quickly because that is just one victory. Scotland can win if they pitch up on the day, but France is far ahead on points difference and I can't see them losing. Only by miracle will France lose.
