Newcastle offset George Turner setback with Fijian signing

Fiji hooker Zuriel Togiatama has signed for Newcastle Red Bulls on an initial one-year deal, with the Gallagher PREM’s most northerly outfit now having recruited a whole new matchday squad of players.

The 27-year-old, who becomes the Red Bulls’ 23rd signing, has been capped 14 times by his country and arrives from Super Rugby side Fijian Drua, for whom he has played 50 times.

A former Counties Manukau team-mate of Red Bulls back-rower Hoskins Sotutu at National Provincial Championship level in New Zealand, Togiatama stands at 6 feet tall and came through the famed rugby proving ground of Wesley College.

The Fijian’s arrival in Newcastle helps to compensate for the fact that fellow summer signing George Turner is set for a spell on the sidelines after suffering an Achilles injury towards the end of last season.

“Zuriel is a powerful front-rower who we’re delighted to welcome to Newcastle Red Bulls,” said Newcastle Red Bulls head coach Dan McFarland.

“He has proven himself at both Super Rugby and international level, is strong in the set-piece, carries the ball with real intent and has the work rate and physicality that are so important for a hooker. He’s a highly competitive player who will add real quality and depth to our forward pack.
