Lions' Smith hit with ban for Super Rugby final red

Kwagga Smith catches David Havili in the air

Kwagga Smith will miss the start of the Currie Cup season after being hit with a four-week ban for his dangerous tackle on David Havili in Lions’ Super Rugby final defeat to Crusaders.

The flanker caught Havili in the air when he jumped to meet a high ball and sent his opponent spinning to the turf, earning him a red card shortly before half-time.

Lions went on to lose 25-17 at Ellis Park, and Smith pleaded guilty to a SANZAAR charge.

SANZAAR consequently released a statement confirmed a four-week suspension for Smith up to and including September 2, meaning he will be unavailable for Lions’ first four Currie Cup matches.

I don’t understand why some experienced players and indeed grizzled internationals have difficulty with simple addition. If a team is about to score a try and you infringe to stop it, you will likely concede the try anyway and the yellow you rightly receive will be worth at least another 7.

Munster started brightly but an excellent kick (one of many) by scrum half Spencer put Bath into the corner. Tadhg Byrne then entered from the side and collapsed a Bath maul destined to score anyway. Penalty try and a yellow and such was a brilliant Bath teams ruthlessness it was 21-0 when he returned. De facto match over.

You use the term, which I quite like, bleating Springbok, quite a rare sound in nature compared to the Winging Poms, a sound so common it makes me think of Heathrow Airport.

When I think of cards or the lack of them in a rugby match, the name that comes to mind is Owen Farrell, even when he got them there was always mitigating reasons found by theRFB to get him back in the English team as soon as possible.

I actually thought Tuipulotu did very well off the bench last night. Is much more convincing than Dan Frost but could still tighten up his line out accuracy (which comes with time).

I hope we start seeing him more off the bench for the rest of the season. I think he has the potential to be an outstanding player for Bath.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement is it? We made it through Covid, increased prices to raise revenue, brought in a coach (JS) that put us 1 point away from a RWC final and then put in a new coaching team that has taken us further away.

Another Lions goes down with an innocuous injury and racks up further injuries for ENG. It’s a frightening number how many AUS, IRE & ENG players have gone down with injuries since the Lions tour.

It will be an interesting call if Bath pick Griffin or Sela to replace Stuart on the bench. Close call, Griffin is possibly better in the scrum but Sela does more around the park.

Very unfortunate for Stuart, but big opportunity for Heyes to prove he’s the starting 3 on merit.

I guess everyone will expect Fasogbon to be brought into the 6N, but Sela is now set for a good run of games for Bath and I wouldn’t be surprised if he leapfrogs Fasogbon.

I have no affiliation with any team in the European cup but I enjoy watching the games.

Having said that, the commentators on the Premier Sports feed I use to watch games here in Thailand were an embarrassment to themselves and the game. The unjustified bias in favour of the English team was palpable.
