Australia Sevens sisters Maddison and Teagan Levi have signed on with Rugby Australia ahead of the 2028 LA Olympics, after rumours spread about a possible shift to NRLW.

The deal will see both sisters remain in rugby union for another couple of seasons, after they burst onto the world stage in 2020 and 2021 respectively.

Maddison has already attended three Olympics in her career, while Teagan has attended two in the green and gold jersey.

Neither has won gold for their side at an Olympic Games, which is one of the main reasons the duo has committed to attending another tournament with Australia.

On the Women’s all-time try-scoring leaderboard, Maddison currently sits third with a mammoth 221 to her name, while also holding the record for the most in a single season (69), and an Olympic record (15).

For Maddison, she’s ready and raring to achieve the rest of her goals in the green and gold jersey, which she says is a main reason for committing for another couple of seasons.

“I’m super excited to extend my contract with Rugby Australia and keep building and developing as a player with this talented bunch of women,” she told Rugby Australia in a statement.

“There’s still so much I want to achieve in the space of Rugby Sevens and to be able to commit until the next Olympics will help me achieve these goals.”

Teagan explains that her main reasoning is related to the talent her teammates possess and the quality of the overall squad, which keeps her motivated to continue her journey.

“I am really excited and privileged to be able to re-sign with the Aussie Sevens squad,” Teagan said.

“We have a talented and inspiring squad that is building something special and I can’t wait to continue the journey with everyone.”

Rugby Australia’s Director of High Performance, Peter Horne, said that the signing of the Levi sisters is only going to improve the game in Australia.

“Extending Maddi and Teagan’s contracts through the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 is a positive outcome for Australian Rugby,” Horne told Rugby Australia.

“Both Maddi and Teagan are important players in the women’s Sevens program and excellent ambassadors for the game in Australia and around the world.

“We are pleased the Levi sisters have extended their commitment to Australian Rugby and look forward to their ongoing contributions on and off the field.”

The next HSBC SVNS Series competition begins this weekend in Singapore, where Australia will be in Pool A alongside USA, Fiji, and Japan.

The Australian side will begin their campaign against Fiji on Saturday afternoon at the National Stadium in Singapore.
