Laidlaw leads Scotland fightback to keep title hopes alive

Greig Laidlaw kicks for Scotland against France

Greig Laidlaw surpassed 600 points for Scotland as they produced a stirring comeback to claim their first win of the Six Nations by beating France 32-26 at Murrayfield.

Viewed as dark horses to win the competition, Scotland were thumped 34-7 by Wales in Cardiff in their opener last week.

The home fans in Edinburgh could have been forgiven for thinking more of the same was to come when France raced into a 10-0 lead, and they were still ahead by six at the break

France went into the break 20-14 ahead thanks to two tries from the excellent Teddy Thomas as they looked to put the ghosts of last week’s dramatic 15-13 home loss to Ireland to rest.

But Scotland provided much stronger resistance in the second half and captain Laidlaw knocked over six penalties after the restart to seal victory.

The fightback keeps alive Scotland’s hopes of lifting the trophy ahead of the crunch visit of defending champions England a week on Saturday. France’s challenge is all but over, though they should be confident of a first win when Les Bleus host Italy.
