Ireland issue statement in response to Bundee Aki allegations

The Irish Rugby Football Union have confirmed that they are conducting an internal investigation following allegations that centre Bundee Aki “engaged with the match official team on several occasions” after Connacht’s loss to Leinster on Saturday.

The 35-year-old was dropped from the Ireland squad for “disciplinary reasons” this week and replaced by Ulster’s uncapped centre Jude Postlethwaite for their training camp in Portugal ahead of the Guinness Six Nations.

The 68-cap Ireland international will instead appear before an independent disciplinary committee in relation to the incident.

Furthermore, Ireland issued a statement on Wednesday, a day after they arrived in the Algarve, saying they will investigate the matter internally.

The statement reads: “The IRFU can confirm that Bundee Aki has not travelled with the men’s senior squad to Portugal for disciplinary reasons.

“The IRFU does not tolerate any form of disrespect shown towards match officials and does not condone actions that fall below the standards expected of players representing Irish rugby.

“The IRFU are investigating the matter further internally and no additional comment will be made at this time.”

Speaking before Aki’s hearing was confirmed, former Ireland hooker Bernard Jackman said on the RTÉ Rugby podcast that referees appear to be reacting to the way they are talked to by Irish players, which he said “will be really worrying for [Andy] Farrell.”

This came after Aki was penalised by referee Eoghan Cross for repeatedly confronting him during the match at the Dexcom Stadium.

“Even the one at the weekend for Connacht, Eoghan Cross, the referee, he warned Jack Carty and Bundee and you could hear from his tone and you could see from his body language that he was on the edge of saying ‘enough’s enough,’ he’s warned them,” Jackman said.

“A couple of plays later, he has to penalise Bundee for questioning his decision, when in actual fact the decision that Bundee was questioning was the right decision from the referee, Bundee was wrong.”

Like it or not the ref is the boss and only he will be obeyed . Any player that feels they have the right to constantly question this very important discipline deserves the strongest penalty

After the Autumn Internationals, I had IRE as a solid 3rd place for the 6N’s but with the number of withdrawals and injuries, I am wondering if 4th place is a better expectation.

They are just being savaged by injuries after the Lions and have likely lost 1/3rd of their starting team before the Six Nations even starts.

SCO & ITA will never have a better chance.

Sorry WAL fans . . . . But at least you will win something at the end of the competition.

You are very confident about that England - Ireland match in Castle Greyskull!!! Don’t count your chickens too early.

Aki would not have been a starter anyway and Jude Postlewaith is a serious customer as backup. We have Osborne also, and Stockdale as well as Joshua Kenny on wing if needed in the squad. Issue is at loose head but we have an exciting prospect in Billy Bohan who will back that position.

Lets see how things start in Thursday.

Remember in that first match last year all the talk was England and France also.

Please remind me. Did Wales win a game eventually last year?

I think Scotland pipping Ireland for 3rd place is a good bet. Let me check with my bookmaker.

I 100% agree that players need to respect the officals and Akis ban is justified for the way he treated the officals. There is however a serious issue in the quality of refering in the URC in particular. I was at the game last Saturday night and the number of calls that should have been made that wern’t was to high. Leinster were constantly offside at the ruck there was high tackles not punished along with other situations missed. Its not fair to blame to ref as there is a team of officals and the 2 very experienced officals on the sideline have to carry some of the blame.

The reality is if the players arent getting a fair rub of the green from the ref in both directions then they are going to speak out and they need to be allowed to do so in a fair and respectful way be that during the game or after the game

Considering the disgraceful and embarrassing way top level soccer players have been allowed to argue with the ref for generations it's good that the Irish refs are standing their ground (even if some of them are a bit useless at times!). Let’s face it the rugby rules are a bit more complicated but that's even more reason to expect some thick players not to understand them and rather STFU.

It does feel like a pattern rather than a one-off. Bundee’s not the first, and he won’t be the last — Sexton made a career out of riding the ref, and plenty of Irish players have followed suit.

That stuff doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Coaches set the tone, and under Andy Farrell Ireland have been ultra-competitive, confrontational and constantly in the referee’s ear. It’s worked for them, but there’s a fine line between pushing and overstepping it.

Looks like the refs might be pushing back now. Probably not a bad reset for everyone.

Irish players or no better or no worse than others for getting in the refs ear.

Hansen and Aki are two specific instances relating to Connacht v Leinster matches. There is a lot of previous there.

When you look at International team organisations attacking refs you have South Africa way out in front with France a clear second.

He must already be guilty as charged if he’s removed from the team.

Technically he was removed from the travelling party as he had the hearing but IRFU ill advised comment in advance implies guilt before the hearing has occurred.

Aki has been given a 4 game ban, so misses this week’s game and the first 3 rounds of the 6 Nations.

a bit harsh (depending on what exactly he said) but things like this should be punished harshly.

not sure what the standard ban is, but 2 months or so might be reasonable?

Respect for officials is what makes rugby different from most other sports. It’s a non-negotiable!

In the last game between the Boks and Ireland, when the halftime whistle was blown Bundee could be heard swearing at the ref. It’s become a habit.

Just as well it was an Irish ref involved, or the conspiracy theorists would be having a field day!
