Ex-All Blacks name just three current All Blacks in 2025 dream team

Six nations are represented in a trio of All Blacks greats’ team of the year for 2025, with just three of their fellow countrymen making the cut as New Zealand’s biggest rivals dominate.

Jeff Wilson, Mils Muliaina, and Stephen Donald were given the special task in addition to providing their usual punditry on The Breakdown this week, casting their eye over the international landscape to award the best player at each position during the calendar year.

France, Australia, and England each had one player in the XV, while Ireland had two, New Zealand had three, and South Africa had the most selections with seven.

There were tight calls across the park, with Ardie Savea a notable omission as a loose forward trio of Tadhg Beirne, Pieter-Steph du Toit, and Jasper Wiese were elected for their respective campaigns. Wilson gave a special mention to Du Toit, acknowledging him as one of the world’s best.

“When I watch him play, there’s a reason he’s been Player of the Year before,” he said. “He is a game-changer, difference-maker.

“For me, he does everything you would need, consistently, minute after minute; he doesn’t take a minute off. His physicality comes in every part of the game, and the fact that he’s been able to cover at lock for them when they’ve needed, too; this guy is an absolute beast.”

Finn Russell also missed out to Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, in what the pundits described as one of the toughest calls. Donald, the hero of the 2011 Rugby World Cup final for New Zealand, explained what pushed him in Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s direction by recalling an interview from earlier in the year with fellow ex-All Black 10 and current Springbok attack coach Tony Brown.

“We had Browny on the show, and he put him in the (Antoine) Dupont, and (Dan) Carter class, and Browny’s not one to throw out wild statements like that. He’s had an amazing year,” Donald recalled.

“Finn Russell would have gone very, very close. He plays for Scotland, and he doesn’t have much of a set-up there; he’s their man every time anyone plays Scotland. I thought Finn Russell had an amazing series for the Lions, too.”

The midfield was another contentious call, with the pundits describing Damian Willemse as a must-have selection, although in what position was initially unclear. The Springbok star ended up partnering Wallabies stand-out Len Ikitau in the midfield, despite neither being selected in the jersey number they most commonly occupied in 2025.

Speaking on the trio’s desire to have more All Blacks in the team, they said omitting Savea was a difficult call, while awarding selection to Cam Roigard was well-deserved.

“Cam is a significant difference-maker for the All Blacks. I think when you saw him out on the field, the way that he played and the impact that he had in big games, he clearly stood out.”

Ramos at 15, surely? By every measure.

Year on year improvement with the lad.

Ramos is a great goal kicker.

Not sure what else he does that is world class however.

Holland and Jordan LOL

Will Jordan was also selected by World Rugby as the fullback on their World XV Team of the Year.

Well deserved after leading the All Blacks in 2025 in tries scored (7), try assists, running meters, and line breaks.

Cam Roigard’s selection at 9 to the World XV team was also well deserved.

That was my initial reaction too. Even Roigard, who did well when he played but was injured a lot unfortunately for the All Blacks. Reinach is much more deserving this year.

On Roigard I also feel like he’s quite overrated by the Kiwis. Yes he’s a great player but he’s still behind Reinach and JGP let alone Dupont. It makes me LOL because some one eyed New Zealanders say that Roigard is better than Dupont based on the match last year in November, while ignoring that the Frenchman has put in top level performances for both club and country for years. However, apparently Roigard is already better despite the fact that he can’t even lead his club team to a final in a weak competition overall.

I would say none of them are deserving of their place. Only perhaps Savea but I’d probably have McReight ahead of him.

Jordan scored some nice tries but overall his game was exposed at fullback. Ramos or Willemse are much better options. If Willemse was in, I’d put Chocobares at 12 although I’d probably go with Ramos at 15.

Roigard played well but only played in two Rugby Championship matches. Reinach should be picked.

Holland had a good year but I wouldn’t say he’s the best in the world at that position this year. It would make more sense to put Snyman at 5, I think he makes the biggest impact. If no Snyman because he doesn’t start games, Beirne can be moved to 5 where he normally plays for Ireland and Matera could go in at 6 or move PSDT to 6 then McReight or Savea to 7.

Jordan had the better of Willemse in TRC with +4 try assist and more post contact meters above all the other stats which are dead even, including defence.

Holland 100% deserves his spot on this list. He won the most lineouts out of any lock in the sport, he outshone other world-class locks when he played against them (such as those mighty locks from France, South Africa, Ireland, and Australia), and he dominated in the tackle and with his hit-ups. He was the most consistent and highest performing lock in the world.

Ramos only played in NW Europe and he didn’t come to NZ to play in that 3 game series. So he’s out. Willemse was pretty good, but not as good as Jordan.

C’mon boys..Du Toit is a 6 not a 7 so him and Beirne to fight it out for that position to leave 7 open for Savea, McReight or Curry. You can’t spend the whole season complaining the Allblack coaches are picking players out of position and saying you need specialists and then pick players out of position for a Dream Team!

Ardie Savea does not deserve to be in the Team of the Year.

Savea was great over the ball jackaling BUT he was nowhere near as an effective ball carrier in 2025 as he was last season in tests.

No one cares how good Savea was at Moana Pacifika, its irrelevant. The World team is based strictly on test match performances.

Tom Curry had an amazing Lions tour and was a worthy selection at 7 by World Rugby.
