Erasmus makes sweeping changes and huge bench call for final Bok game

Rassie Erasmus has made eight changes to his starting South Africa team for their final match of the year against Wales on Saturday, from the one that beat Ireland in Dublin last week.

Ruan Nortje, captain Siya Kolisi, Jasper Wiese, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Canan Moodie, Damian de Allende and Damian Willemse are the seven players who have been retained in the XV, as the world number ones look to end their Quilter Nations Series campaign unbeaten.

South Africa had already confirmed that a host of superstars would be rested for the trip to Cardiff, including the newly crowned World Rugby player of the year, Malcolm Marx, which has opened the door to some fringe players to get some game time.

World Cup winner Bongi Mbonambi will make his first appearance of the series from the bench, having originally been listed as a reserve member of the squad, as will tighthead Asenathi Ntlabakanye.

Erasmus has also opted for a 7-1 split on the bench, with Cobus Reinach – who will win his 50th cap – being the sole back.

With the match falling outside the Test window, Wales have been forced into overhauling over half the squad that faced the All Blacks last week due to their Gallagher PREM-based cohort returning to their clubs.

Steve Tandy has therefore named a side light on experience, particularly on the bench, to play the Boks, who are ranked 10 places above them in the world rankings.

Somebody call the police, I think a massacre is about to take place!

I’d still prefer that bench front row starting

Rassie uses games against lower ranked teams 1/ to experiment with players and tactics, and 2/ to build experience. So the questions are all about what he is trying to do here, other than delivering a win.

Notable items include the 7-1 split, the two inside centre plan, starting with the best scrummaging props, and the seven loose forwards (if we include Dixon and Esterhuizen as options here). Also the biggest set of backs for some time.

Wondering if this might turn into a full-on Tonyball display.

Yep! I wouldn’t be shocked if they scrum from marks in their 22!

They’ll have the entire second-halve to put the Tonyball score on a beaten pack.

Oh Dear…could be a very long day at the office for the Welsh Pack! Being a Wales fan I can only blame all the Saffa keyboard warriors who were stating that a 7/1 bench was a thing of the past…Thanks Boys !! Appreciate your work stirring Rassie up…

Looks like rassie is experimenting in a safe environment, this could get very ugly!

Edit: despite the recent addition above of his claims to the contrary, it’s still another dastardly Rassie plot in the making…

Oohhh. Wasn't expecting that. there is some experimentation. Mostert to 7 de Allende to 13 but nothing that will help Wales. If this isn't over if 15 minutes it’d be shocked.

Anybody dare predict a score. I'd go about 7 - 68. And being generous with the 7 I think.

It could be that grim, sadly.

This is a far stronger team than I expected.

Wow actually.

Looking forward to seeing this backline play. 12 and 13. What a brutal combination.

We know what’s coming from the forwards.

Biggest tallest heaviest Bok backline ever Hammer?

Agree regarding being stronger than expected. If the Bokke don’t hold back it could end up being extremely ugly.

The coaching conundrum par three: Time is running out for Australia and New Zealand

The Razor sacking is not without merit but it has set a new precedent and has changed the equation in NZR, possibly in the global game. Player power has grown in NZR and is now uncomfortably skewed in the players’ favour after the coach was dumped. Coaches have almost always got 4 years to execute their vision and take their team to the World Cup. Alistair Coetzee was one notable exception, Eddie Jones was also fired in the middle of a cycle (having already had 1 cycle admittedly) and so was Rennie but every one of those coaches had abysmal records in the lead up, often less than 50% and had conceded terrible losses to significantly weaker teams and progress under them looked near impossible. In Razors case it was 74% coming off a year where they won 10 of 13 matches and beat the Boks. They even spent some time at no.1 in the world rankings. Progress did not look impossible. Perhaps a fresh perspective from a new assistant, a new direction in tactics and a few minor tweaks and The All Blacks may have started winning at 80% again. Razor even tried to get Tony Brown to change the equation so he was aware of the issues and working to find the right man to get them firing. Was it right to fire Razor now? With all the ongoing developments and new coach not appointed yet Im not sure if the options out there will be any better.

If the Wallabies had 2 more years of Schmidt people would also sit more comfortably in Australia. Australia are going all in at least to get the team firing by investing in players from league before the world cup. What this last season with all the injuries has shown is that Australia needs more players and depth and needs to back the new coach. It does look a bit reckless to be throwing around cash on players who may not even guarantee success but they are being proactive and should be applauded for that especially before the home world cup. The decisions coming out of NZ though look less proactive and are playing out more like a soap opera with new angles on the axing being presented every week and its becoming messier by the day. Some PR is bad PR and this looks like the kind of PR NZR dont need right now. Lets hope they can find their way to a new coach sooner rather than later. The clock is ticking
