Darcy Graham's brief Lions tour is surely over after early exit on debut
Less than two weeks after being drafted into Andy Farrell’s British & Irish Lions squad, Scotland wing Darcy Graham’s tour appears to be over after hobbling from the pitch against the First Nations & Pasifika XV in Melbourne on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old, who was unlucky to miss out on Andy Farrell’s squad, was part of a Scottish contingent that was called into the squad specifically for this game while they were based in New Zealand ahead of a match against Samoa.
However, Graham’s Lions debut only lasted 16 minutes before being forlornly forced from the field with an injury to his left ankle, and replaced by Garry Ringrose, causing a backline reshuffle. The wing received treatment and strapping to his ankle and tried playing on before succumbing to the injury.
The 47-cap Scot looked crestfallen as he was consoled on the sidelines by his compatriot Finn Russell.
In light of a less-than-convincing performance by James Lowe in the first Lions Test against Australia, Graham may have been harbouring hopes in the back of his mind of working his way into Farrell’s consideration for the match at the MCG. Alternatively, should the Lions wrap the series up in the second Test, there may have been the opportunity for changes for the third match. While nothing has been confirmed yet, Graham’s injury, and particularly his reaction, did not look promising for his participation in the rest of the tour.
Graham’s 16 minutes were mightily impressive, however, as he made five carries, carried 54 metres and even bagged a try. He was also the recipient of a high tackle which warranted a yellow card.
The injury would not have been good viewing for Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend, nor Edinburgh boss Sean Everitt. Graham has been dogged by injuries in recent seasons, and his game time has been limited. It looks as though he will be set for another spell on the sidelines.
