Bulls win over Sharks effectively hands Shield to URC rivals

The Bulls produced their most complete display of the season to dismantle the Sharks 41-12 at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, a result that not only revived their own United Rugby Championship play-off push but confirmed the Lions as first-time SA Shield winners.

With the Lions having beaten the Stormers earlier in Johannesburg, the Bulls’ bonus-point victory ensured the Durban side could not overhaul their Gauteng rivals in the local standings.

In front of 32,672 supporters, the hosts ran in seven tries to two in a commanding performance built on tempo and accuracy. Handre Pollard pulled the strings throughout, even if three missed conversions kept the Sharks within distant sight of respectability.

Canan Moodie opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a sharp chip-and-chase before Sebastian de Klerk finished in the corner following a precise Pollard cross-kick.

The Sharks’ problems deepened when Jaden Hendrikse was stretchered off after a brutal collision.

Embrose Papier struck next, finishing a counter sparked by Harold Vorster. De Klerk then turned provider, regathering his own chip before releasing Papier for his second just before the break as the Bulls took firm control.

The Sharks responded after half-time through Edwill van der Merwe, and Hanro Jacobs’ converted effort reduced the deficit to 10 points entering the final quarter. Any hint of momentum was short-lived.

Vorster crossed in the 65th minute after Pollard created space, and replacement Paul de Wet darted over three minutes later to end the contest. Vorster added his second late on to cap a standout display.

The victory lifts the Bulls into eighth place with a game in hand, while the Sharks’ play-off hopes took a significant hit on a sobering night in Pretoria.
