That’s not as daft as it first sounds JW! After all, you almost never see the receiving player tap back, unless they fluff the catch ofc. So it’s catch only and also penalise the chasing player more assiduously if they don’t make a ‘fair contest’ i.e. no charging

Maybe this is what ails the AB’s?

They seem to rely on individuals to deliver moments of brilliance to win test matches. DMac is an X factor player, no doubt, he will cut you up if given space. He is however not a game manager at 10 that can dictate the match tempo, he is brave, but too diminutive for the heavy traffic at 10. Same story with Ardie, not a 6/8 in any international sense. But the AB’s build their backrow around him, hoping for a moment of brilliance in every match. So doing they upset the balance in the backrow.

Good idea. We also have the issue that chasers get ahead of the ball and block off the catcher before he jumps- that needs to be properly too.

I’m not sure about the player welfare argument Nick. The eight changes just mean more big impacts from big athletes, often on smaller players who have to last the full 80. Those repeated big impacts cause lasting damage.

Between that and the way high kicks, the offside line and the breakdown are being treated by lawmakers and refs, we're making it more difficult for running rugby and smaller players.

Good read, I wonder if the writer saw that back row performance from “much of a muchness” players (as he described them in a previous article) Cros, Jégou, Jelonch and then Nouchi off the bench.

Guillard came of age in the 6N last year, not in New Zealand. After Meafou got a lung infection he grabbed the 5 jersey and took it with both hands. How he didn’t win the 6N breakthrough player of the tournament was baffling, instead Sam Prendergast won it. Reminds me a bit of Cros not being in the 6N team of the tournament or not a single Argentinian being in the World XV. I won’t comment about why I think that is.

It’s a poorer quality video that one but Dingwall is doing what I’m saying should happen. He turns and is looking right at Ford with his back to the tackle.

That proves it’s not required, as does you’re last clip where the pass technique is done to a tee how the ‘coaches’ manual says should, yet it a) is too hard to execute, and b) is still easily read for the defender to drift as you describe.

Where Irish rugby should actually look if they want to play blame game

Some good points but I’m afraid that the changes made to more emphasis on defence in Leinster (Nienaber) has changed the game for Ireland. The team is majority Leinster players, they have responded to their losses at club level by changing their tactics and with Ireland there is now obvious confusion between the old and the new. The loss of Mike Catt from the attack coach role has been a big blow also. Many players approaching end days also. Lots of work for Farrell but it will be painful.

Not allowing tap backs. The defending jumper can’t use the tactic as he’s not really going to have people behind him and it is with the momentum of the kick so hard to deaden the ball like the attacking guy can do.

Simply make them have to catch it. Same application as catching intercepts, if yuo’re not in possession you must grab the ball back to regain it (team in possession has more freedom, like make unrealistic attempts to catch a pass than would be penalized if a defender attempted).

It’s the ultimate pinnacle for the players and the one that stands out for them at the end of their careers but the training load of those tours is brutal (and only getting harder).

The 6 weeks rest period is a drop in the ocean and it’s very hard to make it through that next full season, especially for the forwards.

I think this touches a nerve in the convo Miz. Ire have been very successful in recent years playing off a modest professional base, and it has engendered a lot of antagonism with the likes of NZ and SA.

I don’t see them sinking as fast as they have risen and some seem to be hoping, but they are at a crossoads moment where they need to do something definite to stay in the top echelon.

The key to understanding rugby life in Wales is that they never allow themselves to agree on what has really happened. If you cannot do that, how can you ever act on your understanding?
