Bombshell report links Ardie Savea to Leinster

Leinster have emerged as a possible destination for All Blacks back-row Ardie Savea, according to a report in The New Zealand Herald.

The report reveals that multiple sources have confirmed the 108-cap All Black is “exploring discussions” to remain in Japan with his current club, the Kobelco Kobe Steelers, beyond this season.

Alternatively, he is looking at a possible move to Europe for the first time in his career, with Leinster listed as the frontrunners to sign the 2023 World Rugby player of the year.

VIDEO

This has surfaced following the All Blacks’ internal review of an unsuccessful Grand Slam tour, which saw them fall to England 33-19 at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium.

Savea is contracted with New Zealand Rugby until 2027, and he is expected to return when the Japanese season concludes in June, as he did after the 2023/24 Japan Rugby League One season. The current plan is to return to Moana Pasifika for the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific season, with the World Cup later that year, but a potential move could jeopardise his participation in both tournaments.

In the short term, these rumours cast Savea’s availability for the four-Test ‘Greatest Rivalry’ series with South Africa into doubt later this year.

The move from New Zealand to Leinster has become a well-trodden path in recent years, proving to be a popular sabbatical destination among All Blacks.

Jordie Barrett spent six months with the Irish giants last season before returning home – a move that is being replicated by Rieko Ioane this season.

A back-row of Savea, Caelan Doris and Josh van der Flier would be the envy of every other team in Europe, and would only strengthen the reigning United Rugby Championship winners, albeit Leinster are set to lose Ioane at the end of the current campaign.

For now, Savea will be focused on the fixture with Blacks Rams Tokyo this weekend, where he will likely face his former All Blacks team-mate Mark Tele’a.

More likely that Razor will be with Leinster than Ardie. 👍

Is Richie Mo’unga still eligible to play for Samoa/Tonga in October 2026?

Asking for a friend.

🤣🤣🤣 - even for you that was quite mischievous.

It would be good if Ardie Savea goes in a manner that removes him from AB selections. He needs to be ready to step down and become that bench expert he started as if he wants to continue in test footy.

With all the rumors flying around, it sounds like a gongshow in the ABs at the moment - players refusing to play, coaches leaving, inconsistant and downright unacceptable performance…what is going on NZRU?

J
Jen 45 days ago

Nothing good, by the sounds of things.

It'll be interesting what attitude Mo'unga takes if NZR fire Robertson. He signed in Japan late 2022 when there was no guarantee Robertson would get the job 2024. Robertson as AB coach likely played a major role in Mo'unga resigning for 2026/2027.

It’s entirely possible that Mo'unga will just bail if Robertson goes. He has treated abysmally by Hansen, then Foster, so whether he's willing to risk having Joseph as a coach and similar treatment, wasting two years of his career and all the risks associated with international rugby, is an open question.

c
cw 45 days ago

I hope you’re wrong on this Bleed. The team needs a 10 that can steer the ship. It does not have one at present. What is perhaps even more annoying is that Mo’unga would have been perfect for Razor’s systems. It seems we will never know just how significant his selection could have been.

G
GM 45 days ago

Mo’unga treated abysmally by Foster?

The danger is that this will be seen by Razor supporters as ‘player power’. But if Razor has lost the dressing room, what else can Kirk do? It won’t just be about Ardie, but because of the leaks, Ardie might find his position untenable whether Razor stays or goes. I hope not.

Is it automatic that Jamie J will take Razor’s place? If Japanese contracts are so flexible, I hope they look at someone like Dave Rennie, who did so well with Oz before they dropped him for Eddie Jones. In retrospect, losing by a point or two to Ireland and France, with most of his stars out, looks pretty damn good, by comparison with EJ and Joe Schmidt.

Indeed - given that contracts have been signed, I dont know if he would backtrack - bit would he be happy?

1. The Herald article was not put behind their paywall, which is where almost all their substantial work goes, so they are happy for it to get maximum coverage. Napier is anti-Robertson, but all that means is that he is willing to lead on this issue, which from a personal/career pov is a major play for him, which in turn suggests the information he is basing his claims on are sound.

2. There are specifics in the article, that Savea gave "personal feedback" to David Kirk and that a "senior Blues player from NZ XV" refused to join the AB's. If that is accurate it is Dalton Papali'i, given he was the only player who fits that description, and suggests Napier is very well informed and willing to throw Savea and Papali'i under the bus to get the result he wants, or that Savea and Papali'i are happy to have their names used to get that result. Almost certainly the latter.

3. Mike Anthony, head of high performance, who ran the AB's review and is a Robertson supporter, has left NZR, and very abruptly. His leadership of the review was however brought into question when Don Tricker, who previously ran NZR high performance, was brought into to supervise the review. All that suggests that the review is very negative. Hansen's name has been repeatedly used in all media as a target of that negativity.

The article finishes with "NZR must address the All Blacks’ issues or they could face a backlash from disgruntled players." That Napier has been given all that information and taken such an aggressive position says that an anti-Robertson faction in NZR has gone to a sympathetic journalist to start a campaign to publicly pressure Kirk to take extreme measures. "chairman Kirk sits in the kingmaker seat with the biggest decision of his role thus far." As in fire Hansen, and possibly Robertson as well if he refuses to abandon Hansen. Robertson will be defending Hansen, so the anti-Robertson faction will be pushing for both to go rather than neither.

In that context, Robertson's firing would be justified by NZR on the basis of Robertson refusal to present what will be claimed to be "necessary change" in the context of "a daunting six-week tour of South Africa featuring four tests against the world champion Springboks," where retaining Savea would be presented as vital to success. Ryan, who seems to be liked by the players and not committed to Robertson, would be presented as continuity under a new regime led by Jamie Joseph.

The Snakepit of NZR/AB's politics knows no bottom.

G
GM 45 days ago

Good reasoning, Bleed, except that I don’t see it as a snake-pit but a necessary catharsis.

Napier has in the past been very well informed about team selections etc, and I think this is a ‘preparing the ground’ leak.

The XV player who refused to join the Wales AB camp must be Dalton - and good on him, the way he’s been treated. Another way of looking at it would be to praise his loyalty to the XV team he was captaining.

Where Ardie is or is not going begs the larger question of how the NZR deal with the AB coaching environment.

In that respect, it may be that it’s not just Hansen who’s been heavily criticised - it sounds like it’s Razor himself. And if you factor in the scrum going backwards this year, and the defensive screw-ups, it may be that Jason Holland and Tamati Ellis are not exactly safe.

If that’s the case, NZR should be bold and go for a complete clean-out, rather than a piece-meal effort: Razor and his team all go.

Would NZR do that without an alternative in place? The clue will be in any delay of the announcement re the Review. If there’s a delay, it’ll be so NZR can check out the availability of the likes of Dave Rennie.

j
johnz 45 days ago

Even the bloke conducting the AB’s review has jumped ship. Something is seriously amiss, if this also is true.

Both Hansen and Razor were named as problems within the environment leading to Savea’s alleged decision to look at options. I’ve suspected Hansen is a poor fit and has too much power, but if Razor can’t take charge and make the necessary changes to his coaching team, I guess he is too.

It was interesting when I was in London for the England match, I saw Razor on 3 different occasions. He’s a friendly guy, and I’ve nothing against him, but it did strike me as odd that each time he was alone. Without his assistants. And without any players. He seemed a lonely guy in an environment that he runs. Perhaps there was nothing to it, but the evidence keeps piling up that things are not right.

Unfortunately NZR don’t even have a CEO to take charge of the situation at the moment. Seems like a right mess that no doubt could have been avoided.

Jumped or not good enough like the rest?

Anything that puts pressure on Ardie is good, they probably haven’t been hard enough on him in fairness. Hopeful that is about to change.

Yes those things are generally the directors picking the cameras, just the same as images in an article. Can’t say I’d be a playing standing next to him though as that would condone his actions in my eyes. So maybe it was a easy job for the cameramen lol

Don’t read too much into it. Razor just prefers to use the urinal by himself.

S
SC 45 days ago

Savea is contracted to NZR until after the 2027 RWC. He will play for the All Blacks in 2026 and 2027.

If he does not want to play for the All Blacks, regardless of who the coach is, then don’t select him and don’t pay him the All Black portion of his contract. Personally, I would love to see a more balanced back row of 6 Va’ai, 7 Lakai, and 8 Sititi.

Savea was always going to sign a contract to play overseas in 2028 and beyond.

G
GS 45 days ago

My guess would be that Savea would have an option in his contract to leave if both parties agree, and the idea that you “don’t pay him the AB portion of his contract” is maybe a little naive.

He is not playing Super Rugby this year (2nd year out of 3), so his remuneration will be locked in and guaranteed. If you didn’t guarantee income even if they are not selected or injured, players would simply sign overseas contracts that do.

And remembering that Savea could generate more income playing offshore than in NZ - it’s why NZ Rugby are allowing him to play 2 out of 3 years in Japan and give Super Rugby a miss, if they wanted to retain him, that would have been a requirement from his contracting team.

H
Hammer Head 45 days ago

That 2-2 series draw looking under threat SC.

Razor, Hansen and Ryan are no Henry, Hansen Smith. Things seem to be going from bad to worse in the sheds.

c
cw 45 days ago

I think you are right re the balance SC but Ardie is still an awesome asset to the team in some role especially this year. That said, if Ardie is unhappy then this is likely to be having a major negative impact on the team culture - he is supposed to be after all the spiritual leader. I have wondered for some time whether the legacy of the Foster era is affecting the development of this team and as sacrilege as it may be to say it, perhaps it’s time for a number of the old guard to move on.

G

We could use him at Sarries. We have a big hole to fill at No8 next year!

u
unknown 45 days ago

This is nothing but unfair. We (munster) have to make do with all 2nd choice players and so do connacht and ulster. My question is why are leinster possible allowed 3 all blacks in 3 seasons and munster, connacht and ulster make do with their rejections eg. Micheal Milne, Lee Barron & Micheal Ala'alatoa all now at munster

E
Eric Elwood 45 days ago

Leinster are the bigger club. Now that Leinster are getting less per central contract player there is scope for the other provinces to close the gap: which they are doing.

If Ulster get 8-10 players into the Ireland squad they might get a few central contracts, which will free money to buy a little more and so it goes. Munster need to reciprocate and their big players step up and play well for Ireland.

P
PE 45 days ago

You do understand how contracts work? Munster identify the players that they need or want and off they go to get them. Yes, they are encouraged to buy Irish and restricted to 3 NIQs with the exception of Ala’alatoa as he is emergency cover. Leinster have poured cold water on this signing, but Dublin is always going to be a more attractive destination with the added bonus that there is a better chance of a final or two. Unfair? Life gives you lemons, make some lemonade. Don’t suck on them.

G
GodOfFriedChicken 45 days ago

Just note that the thing being omitted by this article is that this is dependent on how NZR deals with the shitshow that is the current coaching setup. Apparently Razor and Hansen have created such a shitshow behind the scenes that a number of senior players have expressed major concerns, Ardie just being the most high profile given that he was the player of the year. Basically his interest in Leinster/extending in Japan are based on if Razor/Hansen stick around as test coaches. Got bad enough that a prominent player in the ABs XV refused to jump over to the test squad on the Northern Tour.

j
johnz 45 days ago

Who refused to a test squad spot? Sounds unlikely… We need names if you are going to speculate.

u
unknown 45 days ago

If true it’s a huge statement of intent by Leinster. They would certainly have an embarrassment of back-row riches .. Doris, Conan, Connors, Deegan, Van Der Flier, etc..

P
PMcD 45 days ago

If they said Toulon or La Rochelle, it would feel like a better fit (for both).

Whist there is no doubt regarding Ardie’s quality as a player, I just don’t see what it does for Leinster in signing him, as it blocks Ryan Baird or Conan, which is not in the interests of IRE, which is why it feels a bit of a push.

J
JW 45 days ago

Same with there last two AB signs though PMCD, so I think we know it’s not about rugby.

T
TokoRFC 45 days ago

Agree PMcD, I don’t get it, a decent prop to replace Furlong would be a better buy. An 8 can’t do much if your scrum collapses before he gets the ball..

It’s the Herald. You’d get more use using the paper to wipe your ass with. Unless another outlet corroborates this, its meaningless.

J

Their rugger reporters are pretty reputable though - they wouldn’t chuck something up that could potentially burn all their relationships and ruin their career.

P

Liam Napier might work for the Herald, but he is reliable. He’s reporting sport, not geopolitics.

H

I’ve seen a few articles now. It seems legit.

G

Napier’s one of the more reliable sources there and there have been murmurs about this sort of disarray for a while.
