History lessons of the past important to All Blacks boss Robertson
New Zealand head coach Scott Robertson insists the All Blacks will draw on their dominance over England when they clash on Saturday, declaring “history matters”.
New Zealand have not lost to England since the semi-finals of the 2019 World Cup, securing a draw and three wins in their four meetings since. Their most recent defeat at Allianz Stadium was 13 years ago.
“History matters and how you’ve done it. We’ll reflect on that, but also what’s happened since,” Robertson said.
“The tightness of the games and what it’s to play like at Twickenham and the occasion of it all. We’re grateful to be here.
“You look at what other teams have done before and how we can tap into that. So yes, we look at the history.”
For all their ascendancy in the fixture, the All Blacks’ three victories in 2024 came with a combined winning margin of just 10 points and it is England who enter Saturday’s collision as bookmakers’ favourite.
“It’s pleasing that you can stay tough and find a way. That’s good, you can use that on the belief side of it,” Robertson said.
“But you know, in Test matches you’ve got to start again and go right back to your preparation from the start.”
Captain Scott Barrett could be involved against England as he nears recovery from the leg wound sustained in the 26-13 victory over Ireland in Chicago.
“Scott Barrett is making great progress. Tuesday’s training is important for him to get through to be available, but he’s tracking well,” Robertson said.
Caleb Clarke will miss the match as he begins a 12-day stand down period for the concussion sustained in 25-17 victory over Scotland on Saturday.
