'Absolutely destroying teams': URC side warned of 'train with no brakes'

The flip-side of Leinster’s return to the Aviva this weekend is the sense of foreboding for Welsh visitors Scarlets, as Premier Sports analysts lined up to deliver some of the starkest warnings of the URC campaign.

With Leinster reeling from rare consecutive defeats [Cardiff and Glasgow], the expectation around the province is that the backlash will be sharp.

“Leo Cullen will be demanding five points,” said Bernard Jackman, putting Scarlets’ challenge in the bluntest possible terms. “The backlash will be a big one. Scarlets are going to be running into a train – with no brakes.”

Tom Shanklin was also worried for Dwayne Peel’s side, not least given Leinster’s historic pattern after losses in the league.

“After two defeats, this is the worst possible time to play Leinster, they tend to respond by absolutely destroying teams. There will be an edge to them. I think it’s going to be very tough for the Scarlets especially with their injuries to key players.”

Beyond Dublin, the growing pressure across the league is visible in every fixture. Shanklin captured the tension of this phase of the season, pointing to how little room remains for slip-ups.

“Every game now carries real weight, and momentum is everything heading into the final rounds. It sets things up perfectly for a really strong finish to the URC season.”

Glasgow’s upturn has sharpened the competitive edge at the top. Jackman, impressed by their victory over Leinster, believes they are moving at the exact speed required for a title push.

“They’ve laid down a marker last weekend, this is a team peaking at just the right time.”

“They showed they’re genuine title contenders last weekend in the win over Leinster. They are incredibly consistent in how they play. There’s a real edge to them, they play attractive rugby, but there’s bite and physicality too. Benetton play great rugby too so this will be one of the games of the weekend.”

Connacht’s transformation under Stuart Lancaster also drew Jackman’s attention after their statement win in Belfast.

“Connacht’s performance last week felt like a breakthrough in terms of Stuart Lancaster’s reign this season – everything they’ve been building towards came together. They’ve always had attacking quality, but now there’s a defensive steel to go with it. They were absolutely buzzing after beating Ulster at home in Belfast. It was like they had won a trophy.”

“This weekend is about backing that up [against the Ospreys]. If they can deliver again, they’ll show they’re genuine top-eight contenders. But Ospreys won’t be easy – they’re well coached by Mark Jones who has done a great job and they’re very a competitive side.”

The Welsh regions, despite financial difficulties and a season of external uncertainty, also received strong praise.

“The Welsh teams deserve huge credit this season and have done incredibly well considering everything that’s been going on off the field,” said former Dragons head coach Jackman. “They’ve all shown admirable heart, guts and fight in recent performances. The Welsh teams not far away. There’s real spirit there, and they’ve made life difficult for a lot of teams this season.”

The Bulls, in particular, were singled out by Shanklin as a side on the rise: “This is exactly what makes the URC so exciting – the depth of competition and the fact that so many teams across the nations are still in the mix.

“The run-in is incredibly tight once again. The top eight is packed with quality. We’re watching the South African teams strengthen at the back end of the season once again, I can see the Bulls climbing the table even further.”
