Also known by their nickname, As Yaras, the Brazil women’s rugby team is an emerging force on the international stage. Playing with passion, skill and flair, the Brazilian side has quickly risen through the World Rugby Rankings. The team is set to make their Rugby World Cup debut in 2025.

The Brazil women’s rugby team will compete in their first Rugby World Cup in 2025. They secured their place in 2024, when they beat Colombia 34-13 in the South America qualifier. 

As the first South American side in history to qualify for the Rugby World Cup, all eyes will be on As Yaras. The team currently has a 20% winning record in test rugby, which includes one victory against Portugal and their 2025 RWC qualifier against Colombia.

The first recorded women’s rugby match in Brazil was held in 1987, during São Paulo Athletic Club's traditional end-of-year sevens tournament. On that day, most of the players were the girlfriends and sisters of the men's team players. 

Ten years later, in 1997, a match was organised and held on Women’s Day. The squad on that occasion contained one of Brazil’s former team captains, Maria Mikaella.

The team’s next major milestone occurred in 2008. As Yaras travelled to Amsterdam, where they competed in their first international match. They played against the Netherlands, who defeated them 10-0.

Following this loss, the Brazil women’s rugby team disbanded for more than 10 years. They reformed in 2019 and played their second test. This time they went head-to-head with their South American rivals, Colombia, as well as a development team from the United States. 

Four years later, in 2023, the Brazilian side celebrated their first test victory when they beat Portugal 10-7. Next, in 2024, they beat Colombia 34-13. This was a huge achievement for the Brazillians, who had been overpowered by Colombia in their six previous tests.

Today, the Brazil women’s rugby team features some of the sport’s biggest up-and-coming players, such as Íris Coluna, Isadora Lopes and Eshyllen Coimbra.
