LONG READ Barrett's Irish adventure is propelling the Hurricanes to new heights

“History is a nightmare from which I am trying to awake.” Up until 2016, Irish rugby might well have agreed the point with one of its greatest novelists, Dubliner James Joyce. Some 111 years after the inaugural visit by Dave Gallaher’s ‘Originals’ to the Emerald Isle in 1905, Ireland achieved their first-ever victory over the All Blacks at Soldier Field in Chicago, and finally woke up to the reality of professional rugby. In a properly Joycean spirit of self-parody the national team did the business in a stadium made famous by American football, while coached by a New Zealander.

In an earlier era of communications, it might have taken a while for the historic news to trickle back home, but in 2016 the impact of breaking the ice was profound and immediate, with Ireland winning five of the next nine games between the two nations up until the 2023 World Cup in France.

Over that seven-year cycle Irish rugby transformed itself into a global innovator in multi-phase attack. If there was any lingering doubt about the new commitment to top-flight excellence, the addition of Jacques Nienaber to the Leinster coaching staff after the Springboks’ repeat triumph confirmed it. Dublin had now become one of the thought leadership capitals of the rugby world. You could learn outgoing senior coach Stuart Lancaster’s class-leading attack patterns, and commit the incoming South African’s World Cup-winning defensive methods to memory at the same college.

Maybe that is why New Zealand backline all-rounder Jordie Barrett chose Leinster as destination of choice for his six-month sabbatical, rather than Japan. When the youngest of the Barrett brothers returned home to Wellington and the Hurricanes, he brought the best of Nienaber, and the residue of Lancaster with him.

Informed by Barrett’s new IP, Scott Robertson’s All Blacks duly reversed the result of the initial Solder Field encounter by winning the return in the Windy City nine years later. It was New Zealand’s third win on the bounce against the Irish, and Robertson was fulsome in his praise of his second five-eighth, even before a ball had been kicked.

“Jordie is pretty special. You get players on your team that are coaches before they are coaches.

“He studies the game, studies the opposition. His memory on people’s statistics, where they play.

“He has given us some good insights and it is great for him to be part of our team. He’s looking forward to the game and has a few mates on the other side.”

As ex-Blues hooker James Parsons observed on Sky Sport NZ’s Aotearoa podcast: “His preparation is razor-sharp. What happens Monday to Friday determines what happens on Saturday.”

His view was supported by his Bryn Hall on the same show.

“Damian de Allende is one of the best midfielders in the world but his skill-set works for South Africa. But in terms of the full package – the run, the pass, the kick and on defence, everything involved in playing the 12 [position] – there is nobody better in the world than Jordie Barrett.

“Hopefully, the All Blacks can use the kind of pictures Jordie [has painted] at Leinster to try and get him playing like that [for New Zealand], playing ‘triple threat’.”

There is a deep and abiding sense Barrett’s knowledge and rugby understanding should be somewhere near the beating heart of new supremo Dave Rennie’s All Blacks’ midfield. It could, and maybe should tow the trio of Cam Roigard at nine, Ruben Love at 10 and Barrett at 12 into Rennie’s starting XV.

Why? The table-topping Hurricanes are the best at playing the game without the ball this season. In an attack-minded tournament coming hot on the heels of a record-breaking, try-scoring Six Nations played out on the other side of the world, they are swimming against tide and going against grain. It is no exaggeration: the Canes from the Cake Tin are Nienaber-mean and stingy.

After seven rounds of competition they have conceded a meagre 98 points and remain the only club to have given up less than a century. Moreover, they are shipping fewer than 20 points [16.3] and three tries [2.3] per game as attack is burgeoning and defence tends to be losing ground in the rugby arms race.

Probe a little further, and some of the other key performance indicators have an eminently Nienaber-Springbok feel to them: after the first six rounds of play, the Canes had built the fewest rucks of any side [84 per game] while participating in games with the lowest average ball-in-play time [34.9 minutes] but the highest active time of possession [19 minutes]. The men from Wellington are also one of the most dominant sides in the final quarter, with an overall points surplus of +50 in the final 20 minutes. Those are all the statistical trademarks of the most successful Springbok teams of recent times.

It is hard to avoid the conclusion the IP Barrett brought back from Leinster is making the biggest difference. In their recent game against Wallaby coach-in-waiting Les Kiss’ Queensland Reds, the Hurricanes first stymied, then dismantled the Queensland attack, before going to work in a second half which they won overwhelmingly, 28-0 and four tries to zip. It is not the winning, it is the taking apart, to bend the famous saying.

In the process they won six turnovers in or after the tackle, while blocking down two kicks and making three more interceptions. Eleven significant turnovers are a tidy return by any professional standard. Nothing encapsulated the new defensive knowledge Barrett has gained in Ireland better than his first important defensive intervention.

From his start position in the 13 channel on the open side of the defence, Barrett can follow one of two basic courses in modern praxis: he can either step up and slide out when the ball moves beyond him, or he can drop down and inside on the man in the second line of attack, Reds 12 Hunter Paisami. In the Nienaber pattern he chooses the latter course, knifing in on Paisami and triggering a breakaway interception run in by Fehi Fineanganofo.

Once you have taken a head like that, you can begin to enjoy yourself even more, spooking the attack with fake rushes into the second line of attack and sending the ripples of uncertainty further out.

In this sequence, the threat of Barrett slicing deep on to the pull-back ball takes the main playmaker, 10 Harry McLaughlin-Phillips, out of the picture and forces the Reds to keep the ball out front, but the Canes are still playing the passing lanes rather than man-marking near touch.

The final interception was also a victory for the form of rush defence Barrett would have become increasingly familiar with during his six-month stint at Leinster.

Fineanganofo does not care about the two Queenslanders free outside him, he has eyes only for the ball and the man making the pass, Reds seven Fraser McReight in the white hat.

The Hurricanes defence proved expert at blocking access to the width of the field and funnelling Queensland back inside, like yellow-and-black shepherds herding the maroon sheep where they really wanted them to go.

First centre Billy Proctor, then bench back-rower Brayden Iose come up square to the passer on two successive phases, looking straight across to the far sideline to prevent any release into the second line of attack. The Reds had no answers on the day, and simply ended up running the ball back into the unforgiving jaws of Barrett.

Defence is not just a matter of individual size, power and tackling technique, even in the middle of the field. It’s the responsibility of systems to put those individuals in the best place to make the tackles that really matter. In this respect, no teams have done better than the Hurricanes, and no individual has had more impact on the defensive understanding of his club than Jordie Barrett.

When he returned like Orpheus from the underworld of northern hemisphere rugby in Ireland, Barrett came back bearing the gifts he had learned and spreading the good word. It is no coincidence the Canes are now using elements of a Nienaber defensive system, and achieving the kind of statistical outcomes familiar to any keen follower of Springbok rugby.

Less ball-in-play time, fewer rucks built and a beggar’s ration of tries and points conceded. We could yet see as many as five backs from Wellington in Rennie’s inaugural New Zealand squad, and the torch of rush defence passed from the yellow-and-black of a province to the full all black of a nation. It’s not traditional but as James Joyce would have said, “shut your eyes and see”.
