'My home away from home': Anton Segner re-signs with Blues
Super Rugby’s first German-born player, Anton Segner, has extended his time with the Blues, signing a new deal that will keep him in the City of Sails until 2027.
Segner’s New Zealand journey began at Nelson College on an exchange program, where his talent was quickly recognised and rewarded with a scholarship from the school. Having captained the South Island powerhouse to a drought-breaking UC Championship title in 2019, and winning the Philip McDonald Memorial Medal in the process, Segner was picked up by the Tasman Mako and made his NPC debut in 2020.
After captaining the Crusaders U20s, Segner took up an opportunity to move to the Blues, where he has now made 38 appearances and continues to become more and more of a key figure in Vern Cotter’s pack.
The 24-year-old said re-signing with the club was the best thing for him.
“I’m incredibly proud to be staying on at the Blues,” Segner said.
“This club has backed me from the start and given me the chance to grow my game in a great environment.
“I’m really settled in Auckland, it’s my home away from home and the Blues are my second family. I love being part of this group, and I feel like I’m in the best place to keep developing as a player. I’m excited about what the next few years will look like.”
Blues GM Rugby Murray Williams said the club were excited to have Segner locked in for another two years.
“Anton’s story is pretty unique, but what’s impressed us most is how he’s gone about his work since arriving at the club,” Williams said.
“He’s taken every opportunity to learn, to improve and to add layers to his game. He’s a team-first player who brings versatility and energy to our loose forward group, and we believe his best rugby is still ahead of him.”
