Las Yaguaretés boss Garcia: 'We haven't achieved our goal yet'

Las Yaguaretés boss Nahuel García has his sights set on a strong finish to the team’s HSBC SVNS 2 campaign in Uruguay and Brazil.

In Kenya, Argentina won the six team competition and beat out the likes of South Africa and Spain to top spot after two days at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi. Now they are the team everyone will be hoping to beat.

In camp for the past fortnight, Las Yaguaretés will play tournaments in Montevideo and São Paulo close to home soil, something which could offer the team a leg up on opponents travelling for thousands of miles in the hope of securing a top four slot and the chance to compete at the HSBC SVNS World Championship.

“We have high expectations for the two remaining stages of SVNS 2, as we’ve taken an important step in the first tournament and know we have to redouble our efforts, work smart, and fight hard in every match of each stage to achieve what we’ve been striving for for so long,” Nahuel García, Argentina Women’s Sevens head coach, said.

“This time it works in our favour. The team will be adapted to the time zone; there are no long trips. It’s a very short trip to Montevideo and then, just hours later, to Brazil. We hope to capitalise on this since sleep disruption will be almost nonexistent, and that’s crucial for recovery. It’s another factor that will help the team be in better condition.

“There are 10 high-level, demanding matches left. We’re going to play each one as if it were the last, which is what we’ve been doing. We haven’t achieved our goal yet; we’re on the right track and still working towards it, and we know that these last two stages will be extremely challenging. We’re confident that our preparation has been good and that we’ll arrive in top form.”

After this weekend’s tournament in Montevideo all 12 teams will travel to São Paulo for the final round of SVNS 2 competition. Finishing in the top four of the overall standings will secure teams with a place at HSBC SVNS World Championship events in Hong Kong, Valladolid and Bordeaux.
