Former England wing Jonny May wreaked havoc on Friday night, running in his first hat-trick since joining Soyaux-Angoulême and helping the club book their place in the Pro D2 play-offs.

After going 14 matches without a try, the 35-year-old showed glimpses of his international class, slicing through defenders to deliver his standout performance of the season.

His first score came off the back of a driving maul, dotting down after lending his weight to the pack. Minutes later, he was in again, this time finding space out wide to grab his second.

With the hosts in full flow, May completed his treble 10 minutes after the break, stepping past two defenders to reach the try line.

His last score had come back in Round 2 against title contenders CA Brive—a match in which Courtney Lawes was named Player of the Match.

Since arriving last summer, May has featured in 15 of Soyaux-Angoulême’s 29 league games and will now get the chance to contest the club’s first-ever promotion play-off campaign.

Scottish-qualified back-rower Alexandre Masibaka also played a key role in the win over Top 14 relegated Oyonnax, finishing as the game’s top carrier and primary line-breaker.

With one round remaining, May and Masibaka still have a shot at a fourth-place finish, though they’ll need to beat Valence-Romans and hope Teimana Harrison and George Ford’s Provence side falter away to Oyonnax.

Brive, led by Courtney Lawes, and Sam Davies’s Grenoble currently sit in the top two spots and are on course to host the semi-finals on May 29/30.
