On this week’s Rugby Pod, the key focus was on the World Cup, with hosts Andy Goode and Jim Hamilton looking at the teams that they thought could win the tournament which commences in just over a weeks time.
Some of the names that were mentioned as possible winners included the likes of Wales, New Zealand and South Africa, however, there was one team that was noticeably left out of this discussion.
Ireland were not mentioned in this topic at all, with Jim Hamilton saying that he was less than pleased with the team performances from all sides over the Summer.
“I think Ireland look woeful, I’ll be honest, I’ve said it. Even though they won at the weekend they didn’t look great at all.”
When Andy Goode asked Jim to decide who he would pick as winners between Scotland and Ireland in Pool A of the World Cup, Jim quickly answered with, “Scotland are going to beat Ireland, first game up”.
Ireland enjoyed victory over Wales last weekend in Dublin. However, they were left to sweat a possible knee injury for wing Keith Earls, amid a confidence-boosting victory where Kearney, Tadhg Furlong and James Ryan all bagged tries.
Head coach Schmidt and captain Rory Best will relinquish their roles after the World Cup, and both claimed the Aviva Stadium sign-off they so craved.
Joe Schmidt’s side will open their World Cup campaign against Scotland at the International Stadium in Yokohama which is the same venue for November’s final.
Hamilton appears to be confident that Scotland can secure a win over Ireland at the World Cup.
“I’ve seen enough of Scotland in terms of some of the tries that they’ve scored and the form of their star players being fit. Finn (Russell), everytime Finn’s played he’s been brilliant. Hoggy looks raring to go and fit. I think the centres that Scotland have got now look brilliant. ”
