For all the questions before the competition kicked off, Super Rugby Pacific was a massive win for NZ and Australia.
Super Rugby Pacific is a brand new tournament for 2022. Although it will officially be the 27th season of Super Rugby, it will include a new format and new teams. The recent changes to the tournament’s format are partially due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw the withdrawal of South African sides from the competition and led to the creation of new regional tournaments. With international travel now possible, these regional tournaments are no longer required and a more traditional style of Super Rugby tournament can now take place.
In its updated format, Super Rugby Pacific will feature 12 teams: five from Australia, five from New Zealand, 1 from Fiji and Moana Pasifika, a Pacific Islands collective based in South Auckland.

In Super Rugby Pacific, all 12 teams will play 14 games. Instead of being split into regional pools, each side will instead face every other side once (either at home or away). The remaining three games for each side will then be played on a regional basis, with an emphasis on derbies.
At the end of the regular Super Rugby Pacific season, the top eight sides will qualify for the play-offs, where the first-ranked team will play the eighth-ranked team, the second-ranked team will play the seventh-ranked, the third-ranked will play the sixth-ranked and the fourth-ranked team will play the fifth-ranked. The quarter-final winners will progress to the semi-final, and the winners of the semi-finals will advance to the final. The higher ranked team will host each play-off match.
