Stuart Lancaster : faire de la place à Farrell entre Kolisi et Fickou
L’entraîneur du Racing 92, Stuart Lancaster, a évoqué le défi que représente l’intégration de l’ancien capitaine de l’équipe d’Angleterre, Owen Farrell, dans un groupe de leaders forts, entre Siya Kolisi, le capitaine des Springboks double champion du monde de rugby, et Gaël Fickou, un totem de l’équipe de France sous la direction de Fabien Galthié.
Farrell, qui a pris un congé sabbatique sur la scène internationale après la médaille de bronze de l’Angleterre lors de la dernière Coupe du Monde de Rugby 2023, devrait rejoindre Lancaster, son ancien sélectionneur national, à Paris pour un contrat de deux ans, à compter de la saison 2024/25 du Top 14.
Le Racing 92 est actuellement troisième du Top 14 pour la première saison de Lancaster, après avoir remporté ses quatre derniers matchs suite à une série de cinq défaites au début du printemps qui a fait monter la pression sur le sélectionneur du XV de la Rose époque 2012-2015, qui a déménagé en France après un séjour de sept ans en tant qu’entraîneur principal du Leinster.
Lancaster est revenu sur ce malaise de mi-saison dans le dernier épisode de sa série YouTube Leaders on Leaders, tout en partageant ses réflexions sur l’arrivée imminente de Farrell cet été.
Opération rachat
Interrogé sur ce que le Racing attend d’Owen Farrell, le joueur de 32 ans qui cherche à mener les Saracens vers la victoire en Gallagher Premiership avant de quitter l’Angleterre, Lancaster répond : « Il va apporter beaucoup. En tant que joueur, il a joué plus de 100 fois pour l’Angleterre. Pour moi, il n’a pas bonne presse en Angleterre parce qu’on pense qu’il est un ouvreur qui joue au pied ou parce qu’il joue pour les Saracens.
« Or, quiconque regarde les Saracens, en particulier ces deux dernières années, verra à quel point il a joué un bon rugby et à quel point il est un facteur déterminant. Si vous parlez aux joueurs qui ont joué avec lui lors des tournées des Lions ou aux joueurs anglais, aucun d’entre eux n’a un mot négatif à dire sur lui en termes de résultats.
« Sa compréhension du jeu est excellente, sa qualité de joueur est évidemment excellente et ses qualités de leader sont également excellentes, mais ça va être un défi très similaire à celui que j’ai dû relever en arrivant. J’espère que je l’aiderai à relever ce défi.
« Comment va-t-il faire passer ses messages ? Combien de temps lui faudra-t-il ? Va-t-il mettre six semaines avant de commencer à réclamer des trucs ? Trouvera-t-il tout de suite ses marques et mènera-t-il tout de suite ? Ce sont autant de sujets de discussion que j’ai hâte d’aborder avec lui.
Owen Farrell arrivera le 1er juillet
« Nous avons déjà discuté à plusieurs reprises. Il est très concentré sur les Saracens en ce moment, mais il va très bientôt les quitter et arriver ici le 1er juillet, à l’approche de la pré-saison.
« Avec lui, Siya Kolisi et Gaël Fickou, qui joue un rôle de leader au sein de l’équipe de France, c’est un formidable défi pour l’entraîneur que je suis que d’essayer de faire de ces trois joueurs un staff solide soutenu par les Henry Chavancy, les Cameron Woki et Nolann le Garrec, qui seront les futurs leaders de l’équipe. Il apportera énormément, mais ce ne sera pas facile, comme je l’ai constaté.
Le défi du déracinement
« J’ai parlé à Siya Kolisi l’autre jour, il n’a pas trouvé ça facile. C’est beaucoup plus facile pour lui en Afrique du Sud où tout le monde l’aime et l’adore et où il est avec ses copains avec lesquels il a grandi et qui lui manquent.
« Je lui ai dit : “Dublin, Leinster, les joueurs, les entraîneurs et les gens me manquent, mais j’avais besoin de faire ça pour me mettre au défi et pour découvrir mes forces et mes faiblesses”.
« Owen s’en rendra compte et reviendra aux Saracens peut-être en tant que joueur ou en tant qu’entraîneur – peut-être même en tant que joueur/entraîneur, qui sait – il reviendra bien meilleur pour cette expérience parce qu’elle l’exposera dans certains domaines et l’amènera à réfléchir dans d’autres domaines.
« J’espère qu’il y a un avantage à ce qu’il sache à quoi cela va ressembler et ce qu’il va ressentir. Pour tout joueur qui vient en France, en particulier lorsque vous ne parlez pas très bien la langue, le fait d’avoir un anglophone dans le staff d’entraîneurs est utile, mais je ne pense pas qu’il va se contenter de parler anglais.
« Notre relation remonte à un certain temps et oui, le recrutement est arrivé au bon endroit, au bon moment. J’ai vraiment hâte d’y être, j’ai hâte de relever le défi : “Pouvons-nous créer une équipe gagnante ? Pouvons-nous y arriver en un an ou deux ?” »

Always reluctant to blame a coach when losses rack up, but Penney must go. The backline is dysfunctional and the coach must carry the can. No cohesion, no idea and in many cases, minimal skill. The trains out of Roma St depart faster than the ball from Crusaders’ set pieces. Wouldn’t be surprised if the forwards went on strike.

With a mammoth season of 15 All Black games they might as well get some value out of his years contract, though even with him being of equal character to Richie, I don’t think they should guarantee him his 100 caps. That’s not what the All Blacks should be about. He absolutely has to play winning football.

1 Go to commentsI think Farrell despite all of the stick he gets in the media is still one of if not the best fly half in the world. He is literally the full package. He can kick one of the best in the world, probably has the best defensive game of a fly half in the world and if he wants to he can run, take contact and find an offload to keep the pace of the attack. I dont know why he isnt spoken more about still being one of the best in the world with the likes of dupont. Farrell is the ultimate captain and team leader and is experienced- he has been in nearly any situation you can think of. I still believe due to these reasons that he is England’s best ever player and is still one of the best players in the world.
