Ce samedi 19 septembre était une bien belle journée pour le MHR. À la victoire bonifiée autoritaire contre Perpignan pour le compte de la 3e journée de Top 14 (50-13) s’est ajoutée une petite cerise sur le gâteau. Le vice-champion de France a en effet pu annoncer après cette rencontre une bonne nouvelle concernant son effectif. Son centre anglais Lennox Anyanwu, qui arrivait en fin de contrat en juin, a en effet prolongé son bail avec Montpellier jusqu’en 2030.

Anyanwu (25 ans) avait rejoint l’Hérault en juillet 2025 en provenance du club anglais des Harlequins de Londres. Au cours de sa première saison, perturbée par divers pépins physiques, il a disputé 14 match toutes compétions confondues.

Il a effectué son retour à la compétition samedi devant Perpignan après une absence de plus de quatre mois due à une opération à la cheville consécutive à une blessure en mai. Un pépin qui lui avait fait rater l’euphorique fin de saison de Montpellier, marqué par un 3e Challenge européen et une finale du Top 14, perdue contre Toulouse.

Sa reprise a été plutôt très positive malgré un carton jaune, avec deux essais plantés samedi à l’USAP dont le dernier de la rencontre après une course de 50 mètres.

It was disappointing from South Africa in that respect. Rassie even rightly called himself out for making the wrong subs in that first test, they could have had all four but you’d have ask “why is the team so reliant on Kriel” etc.

It’s what I was expecting though tbh, there were subtle differences but like with Razor/Foster perhaps more through luck than anything else.

I think the issue is much more simple than this. As you know I did not buy into the narrative that Razor was an incompetant coach. I saw real development in terms of clinical structured play. For me the players were struggling with the regimentation needed to play Black Crusader rugby and it imploded in Wellington. London however was an unfortunate confluence of injuries to our key play makers - Roigard and BB - and another brain explosion by Taylor. The failure also to develop a 6-2 bench compounded an energy deficit in the second half. DR threw out the Black Crusader regimentation in favour of his Chiefs, Glasgow and Steelers formula. It has sparked an attacking prowess we have not seen for years - but it has come at the expense of the type of structured % play that Razor was building and brought with it a high error rate. When faced with a well oiled machine like the Boks, who have been fine tuning their systems for several years, the inevitable lack of coherency is exposed. And if we reflect on the losses to Boks on this tour, we can pinpoint “moments” in the game where the Boks systems overwhelmed the ABs. So, one of the key issues with the GVF analysis is that it underestimates the signficance of context of the games and thus overestimates the real difference between the coaches and the players.

Ps to put some stats around this, I have analysed the performance efficiency of the Boks and the ABs for all the NC and GR games. This is based on an aggregate of pass / carry and tackle per point. The AB average is 4.7 and never got higher than 5.8 while the Boks averaged at 6.7 and maxed out at 8.2 in Baltimore. This supports a strong inference that the Boks systems are just inherently more efficient at this time while the ABs are still coming to grips with their new systems. It is not coincidental that the Boks lost with their lowest performance ratio for the tour at 6.4.

CVC used to own F1 alongside Bernie Ecclestone, they increased the global tv deals and then sold to Liberty Media who have added the lifestyle content, Drive to Survive etc.

CVC have gradually been buying into rugby. They own 25% of the commercial rights to PREM, URC & 6 Nations and have been included in the Nations Championship negotiations. As an aside, they also own La Liga (Spanish football etc) so they are a very savvy broadcaster negotiator and will be pushing up prices, which is how they make the money.

When can the 6 nations change to, after club season? Don’t know what you’re trying to achieve there but TRC is a significantly longer tournament.

If anything changed with Fiji and Japan I would think they’d more replace Argentina and South Africa. with the PNC essentially including NZ and Aus. Argentina and SA might also be better off logistically with the best South American and African teams in a new tournament, which could be aligned with 6N though their would be more point to aligning it with JRLO given that’s where most of their players are from?

All of the cards France took were legit. I would have give a yellow for Australia on the direct red card situation.

Yeah yeah, amazing comeback, blah blah blah. But being a bit more than a casual specator, I am just extremely disappointed with my team's performance. France didn't live up to its standing. And what can you say about Australia? My goodness, it was ugly, disjointed, and devoid of ideas—and that was 11 against 15! It actually got worse as France got their players back. Like, who on planet earth got 4 more players and litteraly lost ? It’s disturbing.

Not of the players, of the coaches. Like how we saw little correction from one half to the next under Razor, and little progress through the year. So far all Rennie has provided is a different style from game one (and refresh attitude from the players) that has not changed. What weve seen in July is the same game we saw last weekend.

Performance wise the players should get better at it (we at least saw improvement year on year with Razor) as time goes on, but I think Graham is raising the question of whether that coaching can keep ahead or whether the players will just cap out/have capped out, at some point.

Yeah me too, Barnes was a hit at the start of Super and might develop. Finau is a loss but again would have taken the same time as Frizell to turn into the player were thinking about (though he’s left a few years earlier than Frizell did so perhaps he’ll return and we’ll get the best years from him). Gardiner is the other top performer from Super, I really like the increased physicality from him this year.

Otherwise you know I like using locking options. Barrett is that tougher mold that turns a cruiser like Vaa’i into a bruiser like Kaino. Hunter Morrison is one such example who looks like a tougher sort of ball playing blindside!

Yeah so you’re not critical of Vaa’i at blindside, more the player implementations of the coach.

Vaa’i, even in this series, has some range capability and handling that could be turned into something by the coaches, but yes they gave up a huge tactical advantage by not utilizing his current skillsets.

What are you talking about Ardie for? The fourth test was like all the rest, the ABs looking to come from behind and win.

Vaa’i in 2024 was like Ardie’s POTY season in 2023. If he was in that sort of touch still while playing at blindside he is going to force Ardie out, given Lakai and Sititi have no room but to displace the old fella.
