Yoram Moefana, enfin un 12 chez les Bleus

Il s’agit de l’un des postes les moins fournis du XV de France. Le réservoir français peut s’appuyer sur de nombreux 13 de formation de très haut niveau (Fickou, Depoortère, Barassi, Costes).

Mais, au poste de premier centre, celui qui est davantage là pour « ouvrir les portes », les Bleus accusaient quelques lacunes.

À l’arrivée de Fabien Galthié aux commandes, le système a été bâti autour de Virimi Vakatawa, qui a malheureusement dû mettre un terme à sa carrière à cause d’une malformation cardiaque. Puis, dans un profil similaire, Jonathan Danty a été l’un des héros du Grand Chelem 2022.

Mais le Rochelais, à qui d’aucuns reprochent une propension trop destructrice (presque Bastaresque) pour une équipe en quête d’un jeu plus offensif, s’est retrouvé suspendu en cours de Tournoi 2024 pour un contact tête contre tête contre l’Italie.

Yoram Moefana a alors pris sa place en premier centre, alors qu’il était pressenti à l’aile, en cours de Tournoi. Puis il a été réinstallé en 12 lors de l’Autumn Nations Series, où il a brillé, aux côtés de Gaël Fickou, capitaine historique de la défense.

Ce dernier était blessé au début du Tournoi 2025, ce qui a poussé Galthié et son staff à titulariser Pierre-Louis Barassi, enfin laissé tranquille par son corps et en pleine forme avec Toulouse, en 13, au détriment de Nicolas Depoortère, pourtant coéquipier et partenaire naturel de Moefana.

Cela n’a pas empêché Yoram Moefana de briller et s’imposer en véritable patron, comme on a pu le voir face à l’Irlande, à Dublin, où il a marqué les esprits à chaque plaquage par son intensité défensive – face à Bundee Aki, excusez du peu.

S’il a finalement retrouvé Gaël Fickou pour la première fois de l’année lors du dernier match contre l’Écosse – Pierre-Louis Barassi n’ayant pas répondu favorablement au protocole commotion – rien n’a changé.

Le joueur de l’UBB a inscrit un doublé et a été désigné Homme du Match. Mérité.

« Je me sens relâché dans ce Tournoi et puis je suis arrivé avec beaucoup de confiance parce qu’avec Bordeaux ça se passait mieux, on a fait des bons résultats en Coupe d’Europe », a déclaré Moefana après la rencontre. « Je me suis dit de ne plus me poser beaucoup de questions et de me lâcher. »

Humble, il n’a pas manqué de remercier son partenaire au centre à l’issue du match. « Merci à Gaël », a déclaré Moefana en zone mixte, reconnaissant que les doublés, ce travailleur de l’ombre « n’en met pas souvent. »

S’il est une certitude avec laquelle les Bleus ressortent de ce Tournoi remporté, c’est qu’ils ont – enfin – trouvé leur 12 de référence, de bon augure en vue de la Coupe du Monde de Rugby 2027.

Late Makazole Mapimpi try earns the Sharks win away to Edinburgh

Jake White described this as the strongest Sharks lineup ever. There is no doubt that it is at least an impressive roster. They did win, which is obviously an achievement against a good Edinburgh side. However …


For much of the first half Edinburgh seemed easily able to create 2 on 1 opportunities on both wings, with the defensive wingers biting in on the inside runner and cover defence being AWOL. Conversely the Sharks showed little ability to get behind the Edinburgh defensive line, with the sole exception of a nicely-exploited Am mismatch against a second row (which led to the Fassi try).


In general the Sharks, with their full complement of Bok firepower, do not look that dangerous in attack, and while tackling was good on the whole and goal line defence was impressive at times, they were exhibiting surprising breakdowns in open play defensive structures.


Also, the Sharks continue to be inaccurate, with material impact on the scoreboard. Missing two very kickable penalties is not the way to be the best. It looked to me like the Sharks contestable kicks were not well enough executed, and were too hard to recover.


Not sure what the running attack was trying to do, but my guess is that they were trying to pull off a Harlequins-style bash-and-offload game off of 12 (Esterhuizen). That’s not a terrible idea with the personnel available, but it would require creativity and a precision on second phase that was not in evidence.


Lastly, you have to have better discipline. It’s great that the team can cope with a 13 vs 14 period (of almost 10 minutes), but smart teams a avoid cards.


Having said that it was great to see the win. I thought that Edinburgh were cynical and niggly. Always hanging around on the wrong side of the breakdown, lots of intentional obstruction, illegal dummying at the base of the ruck, etc. They played a dirty game and the ref tolerated it. Always good to see that not succeed.


Overall the “best Sharks lineup ever” scraped the win, but under-performed their Bok-laden potential. Again.
