Comme chaque saison, l’arrivée du printemps rime avec le retour des matchs couperets de Champions Cup. Un beau week-end de huitièmes de finale en perspective avec dès vendredi le premier club français qui entre en piste. Qualifié grâce à son exploit au Munster (29-31), Castres s’est donné le droit de poursuivre sa route dans la plus belle des coupes d’Europe mais un sacré défi l’attend.

Yeah it’s hard to be critical of Razor but of choices in his first year of the loosies he constantly played Ardie at 8. It would seem that was always the plan and that Hoskins was surplas to requirements (7, with Dalton then Cane, as was fairly happy with but understand the calls to drop Cane for his last test, along with TJ, and 6 was shared around nicely I thought) and he didn’t have the alround game of Ardie to simply overtake him at 8 (and use Ardie elsewhere). Of course he did that exact thing next year, too late for HS. Then last year 7 was fine if though the same problem was brought about by using Ardie (always leaves a component of a back three missing) there so often stopping Dalton from getting opportunities. At 6 Parker just had one or two too many games for me but 8 was shuffled around nicely, even if I don’t know why Lakai was thought to be the key there.

Of course a lot of rotation was brought about by, you guesed it, injury, still. Now to be fair to Razor, in reality we have no idea if he had to manage Ardie this way, based on NZRs desires with his contract (we have seen them move heaven and earth to retain him), and if he benched him often whether that would have caused him to leave or not. Or even that Hoskins would have accepted a jersey unless it was with a single digit on it, and a regular pick, as he had had to work his way back to the team without a big bump in his contract (of loosing AB selection early on) of other people his standing, so he also might have still put his family and therefor more over the jersey.

Why are we having to remember when Sarries did the same?

It’s just reminding people of when Sarries playing squad was at it’s peak they were in a similar position 5 years ago as Bath are today. It’s also a reminder JW the cycle will turn on Bath at some stage, it always does. It’s just their moment to shine at the minuite.

I don’t envy anybody, especially the fans. I could imagine even just a couple of decades ago though this was still a pen and paper exercise for DORs.

You’ve replied twice now to the question about your statement and I’m not sure how either relate. Why are we having to remember when Sarries did the same? Just to keep a nice balanced and friendly place for Sarries supporters?

Suppose my feeling is for a 23 or a squad dudes who can play both 12,13 and cover wings legit are invaluable Leicester does all that and with real punch kind of a ALB upgrade imo even for the tour can’t see them taking everybody especially as they will need a heap of front rowers 3 sets minimum and maybe some props like Ofa and Mafelio who play both sides legit

The more I think about the more it makes sense to make Ardie an impact player coming on in the last 25 to wreck havoc.

I agree Razor’s selection of his back three was hit and miss - Sititi was a good find, but Sotutu should have been selected on form in 2024. I also think we never saw the best of Akira - he should be peaking right now - but he never quite nailed the 6 jersey.

Great post and totally agree, just assume they play Jordie at full back, you could easily cover the backs with a scrum half and Ruben Love and with Jordie you can switch the centre cover if required, with Love slotting in at full back, or Love can cover 10, 11, 14 & 15 by himself.

I think that would make quite a big difference to the AB’s.

With the AB player base and Rennie’s favoured brutal high intensity game it would fit perfectly. A 3x4, 4x7/8 combination makes huge sense for him. Having Brodie back would mean that Vaa’i could play the dual lock / 6 role, as could Barrett and even Holland - though he is more suited to the engine room. NZ also has hybrid backs who can play dual backline roles so it makes the 2 back reserve bench a clearly available option. I think Scotland, England and France have shown how effective the 6-2 bench can be - especially Frances dual lock / flanker combinations in the 6N. This could be a very different looking NZ team if Rennie chooses to follow it.

I think my favourite Twickenham game was ENG vs AUS in 2002 - 32-31 absolutely epic match where you could hear the 80k fans all breathe in every time AUS got the ball and a collective exhale when the play came to a stop.

Twickenham was incredible back then.

NB - I know one of the things Johan wanted to do was increase the spending balance between forwards and backs when he first arrived (he plays a more forward orientated power game) but do you know what the typical forward vs backs spend is in a squad.

I know there are more forwards to begin with but is it a 70/30 split on the spend profile?

I was expecting someone to make a play for James Whitcombe (Edinburgh) to bring him back to the PREM.

I thought he did a good job at Tigers and was surprised to see him move to Edinburgh but i think he could be another useful LHP that teams circle back towards at some stage (he’s only 25).

I have to admit TdT has been a brilliant signing for the years we had with him. Not only has he been a great player but he’s also raised the bar for the other props at the club and had a massive influence around the place.

He’s going to be a big loss next year but I have not heard any fans moaning that he is heading back home, they are all just grateful for what he has done for the club, which is nice to see. Great player. 👏👏👏

Rassie must really struggle to only pick 6 world class front row forwards per matchday 23 and then have a similar dilemma at lock. 🤣

He looks like he is enjoying his rugby again and is happy at Sarries. He’s actually been a brilliant re-signing for them and that is the sort of thing that Sarries do well.

Hopefully they have a similar success with George Martin - England could really do with having him fit and available again. Hopefully he gets a clear run of injuries after such a long layoff.
