Pourtant largement supérieur en première mi-temps, le leader Vannes s’est fait surprendre par Provence Rugby 34-31 sur la pelouse du stade Maurice-David jeudi 7 mai à Aix-en-Provence, dans le choc d’ouverture de la 29e journée de Pro D2.

Les Bretons, déjà assurés de leur place de premier à l’issue de la phase régulière, ont dominé la première période avec trois essais transformés et une pénalité contre un score vierge pour les Aixois (24-0).

Retournement spectaculaire

En seconde période, les Provençaux, 3e avant la rencontre mais portés par leur ambition de finir 2e devant Colomiers avant la phase finale, ont complètement retourné le match en infligeant un cinglant 34-0 aux Vannetais (4 essais transformés, 2 pénalités).

Alors que retentissait la sirène, les Bretons ont arraché le bonus défensif avec un ultime essai transformé mais enregistrent leur cinquième défaite de la saison.

In fairness to the players it was their first game together. I just expected a pack of that calibre to show more and for the team as a whole to play to the level comparable to the Irish or French game. They were really well short of that and you have to ask why. You cannot tell me this Stormers outfit was better than the Irish team. I think the problem may be with the spine - we clearly missed Codie, Ardie, Roigard, Love and DMac. That loss of leadership showed.

It’s not throwing the team under the bus. Rennie has multiple audiences, including the NZ public, and honest up front acknowledgement that they did not meet expectations is an important message and recognition that they are holding themselves to account. Better to start that honest engagement in less important games and build that trust now than wait for a loss. Hansen was very good at this. By contrast Razor was incoherent. Rennie is not either - and needs to be more of the former.

Without reviewing the full game minute by minute I can bring to mind two clear incidents where the scrum (including the wheeling incident - the Stormers were unfairly penalised in my view) was man handled and one occasion them mauling through the ABs like a knife through butter. A small sample perhaps (and not complete) but that is three occasions where an AB pack was clearly bested by a Club team. Not good enough JW.

Good perspective Graham. That is the value of this tour for this AB touring group. Being exposed to the traditional SA style of aggressive, skilled big men who can dominate the set piece - and now adding an attacking dimension through the Rassie/Brown influence. IF Rennie can get the ABs playing their historical game, or at least growing back into it, he/they cannot ignore having to deal with a highly efficient and dominant set-piece team who have added dimensions to their game. In the development phase, we are some distance from the Boks, but because we are trying to play our high tempo, ruthless “AB” game - as well as cope with strong opponents (SA, France, Argentina, England, Ireland) we have a lot of work-ons. What has been admirable about Rassie developing his team is his willingness to test players and systems with an occasional loss seeming to be “acceptable” as part of the process. NZ fans are not so understanding and expectations of winning - even in development - are always high. I think the “trajectory” rationale for changing our HC was necessary because the previous group with an “okay” winning percentage was not seen as AB rugby - the game plan was not integral to the NZ game. Getting that re-established - and then (like Rassie) adding dimensions to that AB game is a long process and the timelines are not favorable. The SA fan base crowing about how the ABs will get dealt with in the tests (if they play like the team facing the Stormers) might be missing the value of these games for re-establishing the AB game so they can also add to their traditional strengths the required steel and techniques to handle any opposition. The AB squad gained a lot from that exposure. Will that exposure result in a series win? Highly unlikely. But the overall project will benefit greatly.

No just a reflection on the composition of the team. It was in reality a genuine mid week team and one that had not played together. Still not an excuse for playing poorly but a large part of that too must fall on the coaches.

Very true, I don’t think it will be that close. Is just exaggerations or to give all black hope. They just appointed a new coach and to even suggest they can match a team that has formidable strength and coach is understatement.

“Until Jacomb, T Kemara, R Reihana etc break through and clearly can perform at international level” Robertson was pilloried for continuing to pick BB and Rennie chose to take him to South Africa, and this is the result of Fosters reign.
