The Kennedy Tsimba shift series part three: Willie le Roux on the art of adaptability

I think when it comes to adaptability well you cannot develop it without exposure (in training and matches), continuity and review. Its about seeing pictures repeatedly and developing a response to that. Its not just a singular response but a cohesive one. Each player needs to instinctively know how to respond to the picture and act as one unit. That comes with time, combinations, exposure, experience. In training its developed by creating or exposing players to unstructured situations as a group and planning responses together when seeing the pictures in front of them with each player understanding their role in that situation and responding accordingly to the next action. Each action builds on the next and ultimately that leads to a highly cohesive side that can adapt to multiple situations in a game. That could be a response to a knock on, turnover, winning a contestable etc. The response is also dictated by where you are on the field and the match situation. In terms of continuity selection matters and combinations are crucial. Its about selecting the right athletes and skill sets for the system. The best player may not be best for the system. This is precisely why teams that have been together for long and have experienced success together can find cohesion in unstructured situations faster. When it comes to review its all about looking at responses to situations and mistakes that were made, reviewing them and discussing how that could have been done better. Its about reinforcing positive actions as well that led to positive outcomes. Review allows teams to adapt to the same pictures faster the next time. Doing the reps matters and if you can do it within a system of continuous review then adaptability can surely be trained.
