La France confirme la nomination de son prochain entraîneur de l'attaque

La Fédération française de rugby a confirmé jeudi 15 juin que Patrick Arlettaz assumerait le rôle d’entraîneur adjoint en charge de l’attaque du XV de France à l’issue de la Coupe du Monde de Rugby 2023.

Arlettaz, qui a récemment démissionné de son poste d’entraîneur de Perpignan, succédera à Laurent Labit qui rejoindra le Stade français avec un autre adjoint des Bleus, Karim Ghezal, après la Coupe du Monde de Rugby 2023 (8 septembre-28 octobre).

Arlettaz « intégrera le staff du XV de France en amont du Tournoi des six nations 2024 pour une période de quatre ans » à compter de janvier 2024, a précisé la FFR.

Ancien centre (une sélection avec les Bleus contre la Roumanie en 1995), Arlettaz, il devrait insufler un style de jeu technique et rapide.

Âgé de 51 ans, il est lié à Perpignan depuis 2012, d’abord en tant qu’entraîneur adjoint, puis en tant qu’entraîneur principal en 2019. Ses qualités de leadership ont permis à Perpignan d’être promu avec succès en Top 14 dès sa première saison.

Également passé par Montpellier ou Narbonne, Arlettaz a remporté la Pro D2 à deux reprises (2017-18, 2020-21) et a réussi à maintenir le club catalan en Top 14 au terme des deux dernières saisons, à chaque fois en remportant le barrage d’accession, notamment le 3 juin dernier contre Grenoble.

So who does JAS push out when he plays in the back 3? Wright and Campbell are both better fullbacks who know their trade, know where to be on the field and can do all the basics right like pass both ways, kick accurately and defend. Then on the wing we have Pietsch, Jorgensen, Potter and Daugunu who again all know where to be on the field in attack and defence, can pass, kick and tackle well. JAS is not better than any of those 6 so who is he going to replace?

For me his biggest issue is his lack of experience and this hasn’t been helped with his ongoing injuries that have kept him off the field. Personally, I don’t think he’s got the skills, experience or rugby IQ to be a Wallaby and he certainly doesn’t make my 23. He needs to go back to club in the off season and spend a full Super season on the field in a position he can learn the game in, probably right wing because he can at least pass to the left, if a bit poorly. Then if he demonstrates he’s one of the best 4 in the country he makes the squad. Other than that see ya later

Coleman kept showing some great glimpses and then repeating the same mistakes.

He worried after his first year that the team wasn’t big enough, asked his players to bulk, admitted at end of season it had been detrimental - then asked them to bulk again at the start of the next one.

Yea I’m not saying Taele is the answer ( tho he is pretty good and has a couple of years of Super behind him ) it could be Rova it could be Roberts could even be Carter ( who has gone pretty well in midfield) could be Brown my point is more around that the Boks have limitations on their depth as any team maybe less for sure but the gap is not yawning .

That’s a long list with some awesome players no doubt but has been a reality for NZ rugby for ages now and will continue but I’m expecting there to be a tweak after World Cup ss for this tour teckon we got enough to put up a good fight at the least …time will tell!

Watching last year’s Wallabies victory of The Greatest Team Ever, just ask them, the Wallabies made them look second rate. 22 points to nil while fresh in the first half look awesome but will this team be fit enough to see out 80 mins as half of them haven’t had a game for a few weeks. Wallabies forward ran away from There backs in the second half with 38 unanswered points.

Suffer the first half onslaught and see how it goes in the second half.

Good club rugby connection between henry, carter and hunter as well nick - all three play for wests in brisbane back to 2019 or so. Different build of player, but that short line henry ran reminded me of Kellaway and his silky ability to slip through a gap seemingly undetected and just be in the right place at the right time for often than not.

Nice one Nick. I have always been someone who believes in players needing to do their role, and that teams should be better than the sum of their parts. Suaalii may be a lab-born, drago like specimen and win every NFL-combine like test on the training pitch, but the fact is he hasn’t been doing his core role and the team does better at the moment without him. He doesn’t link with his team well in defense and often leave gaps even if people say ‘he is a physical league player’. In attack, he often hesitates and picks the wrong line on running, and wrong option when passing. This is why I have called for flook in the past and now henry. Not because they are a better athlete, but because they do their core job and make the team look better.

If you go back to the 1st game vs japan the WBs played the same backline moves with suaalii and I think the comparisons are instructive with henry. Comparison 1: the short ball. When suaalii ran the short line, he ended up running at the same hole as hunter (who drew 2 defenders) and crowded the space rather than running into the hole one man wider. Hunter luckily hit the right option out the back and Wright ended up scoring in the far corner. Herny on the other hand hit the right gap and would’ve setup a great try if not for the forward pass. Comparison 2: bouncing out and hitting the wing. Compare henry in your 3rd clip hitting jorgo when on the outs line and needing to link with his winger - on the chest perfect pass. Suaalii last week got caught between taking contact and offloading, hitting potter on the wing, and canham who switched back and the ball ended up going to absolutely no one. Luckily potter picked it up and sliced through a gap to score but suaalii definitely didn’t execute.

On the other hand he has not been injured basically at all over the years ( multiple strapped areas and all ) so he has always turned up and the players know it .

These pre test games have been all about getting the larger squad game time and room to grow this would apply off field as well ..no big deal .

So much good stuff to digest! Will revert with more considered thoughts later. But one thing stands out - if the ABs do not go with a lock on the bench they will lose if Rassie goes with the team you or I are foreshadowing. The mix of AB mobility and speed will be skewed to the former but in those last 10-15 minutes, with fresher heavy infantry (especially in the Cobus and Hanekom mould) on the field, the ABs will be smashed out of the game.
