« Dominici était en train de fumer le cigare » : quand los Pumas racontent leur RWC 2007
Dans le cadre d’une nouvelle série exclusive de RugbyPass, Horacio Agulla, Juan Martin Hernandez, Felipe Contepomi et Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe racontent de l’intérieur leur parcours historique jusqu’à la troisième place il y a seize ans.
Les histoires de la Coupe du Monde de Rugby relateront les récits les plus brillants et apporteront un nouvel éclairage sur la riche histoire du tournoi majeur à l’approche de France 2023.
Le premier article relate les exploits de l’Argentine en France, où elle a battu les Bleus à deux reprises, l’Irlande et l’Écosse, tout en bousculant le monde du rugby.
Horacio Agulla se souvient qu’après la défaite en demi-finale contre l’Afrique du Sud, le capitaine Agustín Pichot a emmené ses joueurs et leurs familles à Disneyland pour une pause de trois jours.
« Nous étions démolis après le match », raconte Agulla. « Nous ne pouvions pas penser à rejouer la France lors du match pour la troisième place. On les avait déjà battus, ils allaient venir nous écraser chez eux. Ils étaient en colère.
« Le dimanche, tous les dirigeants se sont réunis et ont décidé que nous n’allions pas nous entraîner avant le vendredi. Nous n’avons eu qu’une seule séance cette semaine-là. Nous n’avions pas besoin de nous entraîner. On savait déjà tout. Nous avions juste besoin de nous remettre les idées en place.
« Nous avions l’argent des joueurs, tous ceux qui faisaient une prestation publicitaire ou un truc de sponsoring y cotisaient, et si nous avions besoin de quoi que ce soit, on prenait de l’argent là-dedans. Nous ne pouvions pas compter sur la fédération pour payer. Nous avons utilisé une partie de cet argent pour faire venir toutes nos familles d’Argentine pour le dernier match, et nous sommes allés ensemble à Disneyland Paris.
« Nous étions 60 Argentins à Disneyland, sans penser au rugby, en mangeant ensemble, en faisant le tour du parc. Nous avons passé du bon temps avec nos familles pendant trois jours. Nous sommes revenus à l’entraînement pleins d’énergie. »
Agulla, qui n’avait que 21 ans à l’époque, a été mêlé à une bagarre à la mi-temps lorsque la France a été battue 34 à 10 lors du match pour la troisième place.
« Le match a été très, très chaud », raconte-t-il. « On remontait le tunnel et je me souviens que notre kiné essayait de straper l’un de nos joueurs. Il était au milieu du tunnel et l’un des joueurs français l’a poussé et il est tombé. J’arrivais par derrière et il y a eu une petite bagarre. En sortant du tunnel, la même chose s’est produite. Imaginez comment nous avons commencé la deuxième mi-temps.
« Après le match, on chantait, comme après chaque entraînement ou chaque match, avec nos enceintes, fort, autour de la zone de presse, en plaisantant là. Les Français passaient par là et ils étaient furieux, ‘vous ne nous respectez pas’. On s’amuse, c’est tout… Allez-y, montez dans votre bus.
« Nous les avons revus après en boîte de nuit. Je regardais en me disant : ‘oh putain, il va y avoir une bagarre ici, où est-ce que je vais me mettre s’il y a une bagarre ? Je n’irai pas au milieu de la bagarre, je vais me faire écraser”. J’ai regardé autour de moi et j’ai vu que Christophe Dominici était en train de fumer le cigare sur le côté et je me suis dit, oh mec, ce type comprend tout. Après ça, tout s’est bien passé. À la fin de la soirée, nous buvions tous ensemble. »

Playoffs featuring 4 or 6 teams would mean the other teams playing meaningless games for longer and a further drop of interest in Australia. But yes a 12 team competition with 8 teams making finals is ridiculous.

As a die hard rugby tragic and loyal supporter of the game can I say your article seems a touch negative so I would like to offer a slightly different spin on it. I am assuming that the sole purpose of the Super Rugby competition is not just to be a training camp for the International teams but an independent event and competition in its own right with sponsors, media companies and teams that need a financial return. Now, from this rugby fans perspective, I am enjoying the last few weeks of the competition and enjoying the fact that most teams can still make the play offs and nobody wants the wooden spoon. Most rugby followers would agree to it being a travesty if the Crusaders or the Waratahs now made it to the final but history tells us it is very unlikely with the importance of home ground advantage. Playing each team once and a four team final would give the competition integrity and a level playing field for all teams but I would be surprised if it could satisfy the financial demands of the TV rights. Maybe a six team finals series might be a possible compromise.

If we cut it down to 10, had a single round robin format, and only had semi-finals and a grand final, the final game would be on the first weekend of May. Meanwhile the AFL (similar to the NRL) runs until the last weekend of September and starts almost a full month after Super Rugby. At least the players would get plenty of rest!

We the supporters and critics will settle for nothing less because historically it is what we have become ingrained and accustomed to. With that in mind and the distinct fall from grace of his beloved crusaders we will expect him to stamp his mark in the same way he left his old post.

Lacking in my opinion is the skill sets that once was and now seemingly vacant within the squads regular front runners. Furthermore there seems to be no set game plan, the accuracy that once was is no more, the quality off the bench were poor matchups and frankly I feel a lot has to do with the coaching. Never thought i’d be critising the sadas to this degree.
