L’ailier de l’Union Bordeaux-Bègles Damian Penaud, touché à la cheville, est sorti peu avant l’heure de jeu lors de la demi-finale de Champions Cup contre Toulouse, dimanche 4 mai à Bordeaux.

Le meilleur marqueur d’essais de l’histoire du XV de France a dû céder sa place à la 57e minute à Arthur Retière après s’être fait mal à la cheville gauche à la tombée d’un renvoi dans le camp toulousain.

Il est longtemps resté au sol avant de sortir, épaulé par les soigneurs. Il ne pouvait d’abord pas poser le pied par terre, avant de regagner les vestiaires en boîtant.

Yes there are. Scotland and Glasgow spend a huge amount of time linking one ruck to another and it’s a very legit way to play the game, and try to beat the Boks.

NZ didnt look comfortable against the Stormers line speed and physicality. Their discipline was also a shambles. A solid scrum is the first step but to beat this team they need to improve their bench and match the bomb squad, concede <10 pens a game and match up with the physicality and make a mess of the Bok lineout. They also need to massively improve their catching on this tour.

If I’m not mistaken the clips come from 2024, which is in the past. And NZ do have the same front row then, available on tour now - De Groot, Taylor and Lomax.😁

I agree the Boks cant build rucks like this. They need lots of mauls, pens and scrums but not only that they need penetration from broken field situations involving the contestables.

The reason South African sides can dominate on the opposition feed and still have a negative penalty count is that referees are not rewarding backward movement; they are rewarding legal dominance. If a pack drives forward but is judged to have angled in, lost its bind, collapsed, or infringed first, the penalty goes against it.

So, let’s get this right. SA scrums are still ‘dominant’ but refs penalize them for it on defence? They do it ‘legally’ when they have the ball and win pen, but use the same techs on defence and get the opposite result?

Problem wont come in the starters for the All Blacks, it has always come from the bench in the last 3 years. The Boks bench doesnt drop off, the All Blacks do and alot of the bench players were in that stormers match. The All Blacks are lacking depth and the bench problem is potentially larger than any of the starting ones. If they lose the Scrum and lineout after 50mins it wont matter how good Grooter, Lomax or Holland are.

Yes the Argy game sorta proved the point didn’t it NLR?

When teh Boks try to keep ball [100+ rucks] and keep it in play [43’ last weekend] they are pretty ordinary. When they keep it for 70-80 rucks and limit ball-in-play to around 35’ they can be extraordinary and look unbeatable!

I see a big challenge coming from the ABs at lineout time, if they do pick Vaai at 6 and say, Lord + Holland in the second row they cd have better lineout athletes there…

I also think you’re correct about altitude… Glasgow/Scotland/Ireland and the WBs ahve all won matches recently on the high veld.

2 pretty distinct camps developing around this tour but are NZ concentrating their fire where they should be. South Africa built 114 rucks at the weekend, had 148 carries and forced Argentina into 188 tackles. Argentina made 92% of their tackles and defended like beasts. South Africa also made just 147 passes indicating the one off runner was a big theme behind that thanks to Argentina line speed and a willingness to fan out on defence. The Boks also made 43 kicks, how did they do that while building 114 rucks? Lots of possession thats how. Argentina focused on making tackles and meeting physicality head on in the contact zone, they let the Boks have the rucks and the ball. Springboks also couldnt win the ball back from the contestables, kicked too long, made too many mistakes, retreating catchers taking the ball over their heads worked. Argentina could and perhaps should have drawn despite their scrum and set piece struggling. Even so they gave the All Blacks a template on how to defend the Boks. Their wide attack also exposed space and if they didnt have 16 handling errors they might have done something special. NZ are talking about running the Boks off their feet, playing with tempo and pace and building rucks. Perhaps the best way to beat the Boks is to let them have the ball, make mistakes and then spread it wide using your skill to beat the defence? So my question is, are NZ firing shots on and off the field in the wrong direction playing into the hands of an opponent that wants them to run? Judging by the Stormers game I would say yes.

The ABs will say that the Nations Champ showed they can retain the ball for 130+ rucks per game. So did Scotland against an excellent Bok jackaling team.

Wallabies won't shy away from 'license to play' under Kiss

Honestly, their attacking fluency was a shadow of what we saw in the first 3 tests. I hope Paisami gets his no look passing angles out the back better for Declan to collect on the sweeping run.

It would also be great for the Wallabies to switch their intensity back on in defence. We were playing good heads up defence late in Schmidts tenure, but we have been looking lacklustre lately.
