Avec sept essais, l’ailier de Bordeaux-Bègles Louis Bielle-Biarrey est devenu le meilleur marqueur français sur une seule édition du Tournoi des Six Nations, grâce à un doublé lors du triomphe français contre l’Irlande (42-27) samedi à Dublin.

Déjà auteur de deux doublés contre le Pays de Galles et l’Angleterre, et d’un essai en Italie, « LBB » a signé deux nouveaux essais (21e et 50e) et dépasse l’ailier Philippe Bernat-Salles, précédent détenteur du record français avec six essais.

« J’ai la confiance du staff, la confiance de mes coéquipiers, je pense que je suis en confiance aussi », a déclaré Louis Bielle-Biarrey (17 essais en 18 sélections), qui a marqué à chaque match des Bleus depuis le début de la saison 2024-2025.

L’autre ailier français, son coéquipier à l’UBB Damian Penaud, a lui égalé samedi le record de Serge Blanco avec 38 essais sous le maillot du XV de France.

« J’ai d’abord espéré que Damian le batte si possible la semaine prochaine », a dit Bielle-Biarrey qui, malgré son impressionnant ratio d’essais, n’en fait pas une obsession.

« Ce n’est pas mon objectif premier non plus de marquer des essais, je préfère faire de bonnes performances, être complet dans mon jeu », a ajouté la flèche bordelaise de 21 ans.

Face à l’Écosse, samedi 15 mars au Stade de France, Bielle-Biarrey pourrait égaler ou dépasser le record absolu d’essais en une édition (8), co-détenu par l’Anglais Cyril Lowe (1914) et l’Écossais Ian Smith (1925).

2025 Lions' selection: An idiot's guide

In terms of players, I don’t think so many English players is really warranted. Ringrose or Henshaw would be a much safer selection than Daly; Jack Willis and Dave Ribbans are extremely unlikely to get the nod over current test players; and while Ford is definitely good enough to go, so is Sam Prendergast.

Other than that I think these are fairly decent selections.

this is an unfortunate development at a time when England have just pivoted towards building their team around a core of saints players

I reckon the summer might see a pretty significant influx of Bath players. Will Butt, Guy Pepper, Max Ojomoh, and Beno Obano were all pretty unlucky not to be involved in the 6N, and I think quite a few of the PRC team could be bolters if they get minutes in the prem over the next weeks. Ewan Richards has been excellent and England really need depth at lock. Ciaran Donoghue and/or Orlando Bailey might get a look in too if any of England’s fly halves are unavailable. Arthur Green and Tom Carr-Smith are playing in more competitive positions but could spring a surprise.

Despite all the players and coaches lost overseas, there’s still just enough talent left to craft a really strong side, if Razor and Co actually have the guts to give younger players a chance, that doesn’t require an injury to make happen.

Trusting the same core group of ‘experience’ that’s been there for over five years now will just see the same results, and the same 70% win ratio come years end. If you ignore history, you’re doomed to repeat it.

It also helps that France has more money and registered pro players than any other nation, and they don’t lose those players overseas, they drain them from other nations instead. Especially useful if those countries then can’t select those players.
