Simon Mannix, sélectionneur du Portugal, a fait appel à quelques nouveaux en vue de l’Autumn Nations Series. On retrouve notamment Lucas da Silva, joueur de Brive et meilleur marqueur d’essai de Pro D2.

Après plusieurs années de rumeurs, le talonneur va enfin avoir l’occasion de faire ses débuts sur la scène internationale après un gros début de saison.

Le contrat qui le lie au CAB se termine en juin 2025. Le Stade Français, l’USAP et Provence Rugby sont prêts à faire une offre, ce qui pourrait l’emmener vers le Top 14.

L’Autumn Nations Series marque aussi le retour de Samuel Marques en test-match, lui qui avait manqué le Europe Championship 2024 et la tournée de juillet en Afrique. Le Biterrois compte 99 points sur l’année en Pro D2 et jouera contre l’Écosse.

Francisco Fernandes, pilier de Béziers, Joris Moura, arrière de Valence-Romans, et Rodrigo Marta, trois-quarts de Colomiers, sont les principaux absents. Ils ne disputeront aucun des test-matchs cet automne. Marta est l’un des joueurs clés de l’effectif depuis quatre ans mais est blessé et sera absent cinq semaines.

Simon Mannix est en charge de la sélection portugaise depuis le mois de mai. Il a réussi à constituer un groupe costaud et visera la victoire contre les États-Unis, à Coimbra, le 9 novembre, avant de se rendre à Murrayfield pour affronter l’Écosse le 16 novembre, 26 ans après le premier match du Portugal contre le XV du Chardon.

'Not New Zealand Rugby': Former All Black shocked by latest tactics

A first matchday with a very poor level of play. The New Zealand teams did nothing but kick the ball aimlessly. And half of those kicks weren’t even executed properly… the scrum-half keeps kicking 15–20 meter balls in a robotic way, without really analyzing what he’s actually doing.

When you then compare it to the style of play developed in the Six Nations, it’s very worrying. Watching France play such intelligent, constantly moving rugby is a real pleasure.

One theme dominates reaction to England chariot grinding to halt

Where do you start with England? It felt like two steps backward. This happened under Lancaster where the forwards got above themselves in thinking they didn't need to do the grunt work up front because they were in the backs instead of securing quick ruck ball. Last week I questioned whether my opinion of George Ford at 19 was wrong. This week I know I was right. Just like Prendegast and unlike Finn Russell he offers no running threat and only looks good when the forwards are on the front foot. Why was Cowan Dickie on in place George? You know the first 20 mins are going to be chaotically critical and yet Borthwick chose a hooker who is liable to do stupid things as it so proved with a no arms tackle deep in the Scotland half turning an English scrum into a Scottish penalty which a few minutes later turned into a Scottish try. Enough has been said about Arundel. Several players were absent during the game.

What I Havnt seen is criticism of the English coaches. It was obvious what the English game plan was going to be and Scotland practiced for it. I cannot imagine for one moment Rassie employing exactly the same tactics two matches in a row expecting to get the same result. Maybe Borthwick read too much into the Wales game and too little into Scotland game against Italy. Freeman at centre is a bust. He needs to go back to the wing. Fin Smith at 10 with Marcus Smith as back up and to cover 15 where Furbank would come in. Whilst Steward is able enough without the protection of runners his ariel prowess is less impressive he lacks real pace when joining the line.

Breathing fire. Haha. Well nobody will be fearing that team anyway. Maybe they will be good next week. Who can say what they might do. What we do know is there recent record against Ireland is poor. Based on form, they won’t find that game easy either. Imagine they are 1 from three with France still to play. That would make the tournament for me.

All accurate, but I think they will learn from this, the kicking game needs to evolve, used when needed, against France it might work, the Irish (although not playing great less so, against the South Africans, will have hands full

Where France is ahead of almost everyone at the moment is they have a pretty good idea who their best players and combinations are. And a few players have stepped up to close the gap between their first choice players and themselves.

Galthie has been building depth and the 3-0 series loss in NZ was valuable in the long run.
