Du turnover et le retour de Pauline Bourdon-Sansus : la composition des Bleues pour le Brésil

C’était prévu, le duo de sélectionneurs Gaëlle Mignot – David Ortiz a choisi ce deuxième match de poule dimanche contre le modeste Brésil (17h45) pour faire une revue d’effectif. Ils ont ainsi procédé à onze changements dans leur XV de départ par rapport à celui qui a été choisi pour débuter la Coupe du monde samedi dernier contre l’Italie (24-0). Seules Gabrielle Vernier au centre, la co-capitaine Marine Ménager, qui passe du centre à l’aile, l’ailière Kelly Arbey et la troisième ligne Léa Champon seront encore sur le terrain au coup d’envoi.

Ce sont des choix des entraîneurs puisque seul Teani Feleu, la petite soeur de la co-capitaine Manae, est indisponible car blessée après le match contre l’Italie.

Le match sera l’occasion pour la troisième ligne Marie Morland ainsi que pour la pilier invitée de dernière minute de la liste Makarita Baleinadogo de connaître leur première sélection.

Cette rencontre face au petit Poucet brésilien, balayé 66-6 lors du premier match contre l’Afrique du Sud, sera par ailleurs l’occasion de réintégrer la demi de mêlée toulousaine Pauline Bourdon-Sansus, suspendue deux matchs à l’issue de la dernière finale d’Élite 1 suite à des propos sur l’arbitrage et qui avait manqué le test préparatoire contre l’Angleterre (6-40) et l’entame de Mondial face aux Italiennes. Alexandra Chambon, qui a plutôt bien assuré son intérim, retrouve sa place de doublure et prendra place sur le banc de touche.

What might deter Borthwick from making the change at 10 is that Ford bears most of the kicking burden - he is the top kicker after two rounds with 34 kicks and the only one with over 1000 metres [1261m] kicked.

The next #10 [Russell] on the list has kicked for less than half of the metres Ford has! If Fin starts, most of the kicking burden shifts to 9.

These are very big calls for any coach Rupps… I’m only guessing but I would think Johnny Sexton is probably lobbying quite hard for Sam P behind the scenes.. There are a lot os similarities between the two as young 10’s!

Also Rassie was under a fair bit or pressure to do something definite after losing the first two out of three in TRC 2025. He could have junked Tony-ball but he doubled down on it and was repaid.

The other aspect which has been conveniently forgotten is that Eng committed four silly errors deep in the Scot 22 - mostly knock-ons - when they looked poised to score. So even playing with 14 men for half an hour there is ample scoring potential.

I think the age difference is also key in the comparison between Ford and Fin. Nine years is a big gap and Ford will be 33 next month.

The wings will need to be better with more kicking off 9 from Mitch, and I hope they make use of Daly’s left boot too… The running and passing should be a lot more cohesive with that lot together too.

It seems - fly half speaking - the English are where South Africa was under Coetzee. Ten years ago someone like Manie Libbok would never have been selected. It was Morne Steyn with HP waiting his turn. They occasionally used Pat Lambe but the north were never convinced he was the answer. The English don’t seem to know what to do with players like Danny Cipriani and Marcus Smith. I wonder how Marcus would fit into the Springbok setup today? How would they use him or would they?

It was concerning that Andy Farrell did not replace Sam Prendergast till around 55 mins. Given the game he was having feel he should not have started the 2nd half. Would have replaced Craig Casey too. He was struggling. It was that combination of JGP and Crowley that lifted Ireland, I felt.

Jack Crowley should clearly start this week, and I would look at leaving Sam out of the 23, playing Harry Byrne. I think he needs to be allowed time to build confidence as he matures.

I fear England whom ever they pick at 10. I’m not confident Ireland will handle the Ford barrage well. If it is Fin Smith who starts, then there will be different threats. That might actually suit Ireland better in that there may be better broken field opportunities for them to take advantage of.

Borthwick is the most conservative head coach in international rugby. Ford oozes conservatism so Borthwick loves him. Both the Smiths are mavericks by comparison. The obvious choice is Finn Smith to lead Englands daring strategy. He embodies solidity but can also fix defences with his running game and varies his play enough to keep everyone guessing. Marcus Smith is way too out there for Borthwick but he has enormous potential and when he is on there isn’t a better game driver in England. Borthwick wants to transform England into a positive go forward team but is torn between that desire and his natural inclination towards conservatism. If anything, this persistence with Ford is more about the coaches internal struggle than the players themselves.

Prendergast is a wonderful talent and shows glimpses of his potential but not regularly enough. He is also wild with the boot and plays frenetically at times often making poor decisions and creating more confusion for himself and his teammates with his muddled play. Crowley is abrasive and direct, he feeds off positive energy and is quite a consistent performer. He also brings others into the game quite well. When things are going badly though he is petulant and prone to ill-discipline. Farrell is trying to find that all round world class 10 to replace Sexton but sees flaws in both players and can’t find the balance he needs with either which is why he is struggling to favour either player.
