Ulster Rugby have confirmed that they have signed a new ‘overseas’ flyhalf, but are as of yet refusing to name the player.

Speaking following their heavy defeat to Leinster, the Irish Times report that Ulster’s Director of Rugby Less Kiss said: “We have got a new person to replace Christian and we will announce that in due course. It’s an overseas player and all that has been cleared so no problems.”

Christian Lealifano joined from Brumbies on a short-term deal in August and is due to head back to the Super Rugby side in early 2018. He was called in as a rush replacement for Paddy Jackson, who is currently before the courts on a rape charge.

“I can’t look too far ahead. I’ll go until the end of January and do the best I can,” Lealiifano told the BBC Sport in Ocotber, but he will rejoin the Brumbies.

Rumours are circulating that former Wallaby great Matt Giteau is the mystery man that will take up the role at the club.

Giteau is currently finishing his season for Suntory Sun Goliath in Japan, but has also been linked with a temporary move back to Toulon as a medical joker, which has been widely reported in France in the last 12 hours.

Giteau won 103 caps for the Wallabies in a stellar career, his last cap coming in 2016.

A number of players have been linked with the position including former All Black Stephen Donald and Wallaby Quade Cooper.

Ulster are badly in need of a boost, as they endure one of their worst Pro14 seasons in years.
